The theory of the migration of the bubble formed by the gaseous products of an underwater explosion is review, particular care being taken to state the assumptions involved and to indicate their validity. The theory is then compared with the experimental data available at the Underwater Explosives Laboratory by graphical mean. The comparison show that the theory correctly predicts the migration for charges weighing less than 25 lbs but predicts too great a migration for larger charges except when the larger charges are very deep.

The migration of underwater explosion bubbles caused by gravity (buoyancy) affects the energy of the pulsation as well as period and maximum radius in the second and subsequent cycles. Experimental data on periods of explosions in various depths are analyzed, and the bubble energy is determined for five cycles of the oscillation as a function of the strength of migration. The result is given in dimensionless form which permits the calculation of periods, maximum radii, and migration for a wide range of conditions. An energy balance shows the surprising result that the bubble energy of the second cycle increases with increasing intensity of migration until a maximum is reached at a condition of strong migration. Beyond this point, the energy decreases again. This gain is found to be due to the decrease of the energy radiated by the bubble pulse.

Graphs are presented for the relative bubble energies, maximum radii, periods, and migrations of underwater explosion bubbles for four cycles of the bubble oscillation. The migration refers to the bubble maximum in each cycle. The position of the bubble minimum can be readily found by a simple computation. The graphs permit a convenient reading of these parameters for a wide range of conditions.

An important phenomena associated with the upward motion of a gas bubble from an underwater explosion is the significant departure from sphericity near the times of the minimum bubble radius. Neglecting this change in shape results in the prediction of a much faster upward velocity than actually occurs. Inclusion of this effect in the equations of motion has been exceedingly difficult because of the large magnitude of the departure from sphericity. This report describes the shape of the bubble by an ellipsoid whose axes are allowed to vary independently, thus modelling, to first order, the changes of bubble shape. The Lagrangian equations of motion, incorporating the effects of the change of shape and of energy loss by the radiation of sound, are derived and solved for the case of a spheroidal bubble. Results of these calculations for various initial conditions are compared with analgous cases for a spherical bubble. It is found that the spheroidal bubble model predicts a reduction in the upward translational motion of the bubble by a factor of approximately 2. Comparison of the predicted upward motion of a spheroidal bubble produced by 227.27 kg. of TNT detonated 46 metres below the surface shows good agreement with that which has actually observed. Keywords: Explosion bubbles. (Canada).

A submerged gold wire was electrically exploded to simulate a very deep underwater nuclear detonation. These small-scale tests were conducted in a test tank in which the air pressure may be varied to obtain various strengths of buoyant bubble migration. The mechanics of explosion bubble formation, pulsation, and migration are discussed, and relevant relationships are derived for scaling large-yield bubble behavior in the laboratory by variation of environmental parameters. The mechanisms by which the explosion products, initially at the bubble center during the first cycle, are redistributed by bubble bottom collapse, compression, reexpansion, and migration, are investigated. The experimental technique involved physically sampling the bubble and its environment at the second bubble maximum to define the extent and nature of explosion product re-distribution. Three different shot conditions were investigated, corresponding to a 'rest-point' condition, a condition characterized by slight upward migration, and one characterized by strong upward migration. In all cases, it was found that most (77 to 94%) of the explosion products are lost to the environment by the time of the second bubble maximum. The probable mechanisms for this loss are discussed, and rules are derived for application of these results to full-scale underwater bursts.
