The migration of underwater explosion bubbles caused by gravity (buoyancy) affects the energy of the pulsation as well as period and maximum radius in the second and subsequent cycles. Experimental data on periods of explosions in various depths are analyzed, and the bubble energy is determined for five cycles of the oscillation as a function of the strength of migration. The result is given in dimensionless form which permits the calculation of periods, maximum radii, and migration for a wide range of conditions. An energy balance shows the surprising result that the bubble energy of the second cycle increases with increasing intensity of migration until a maximum is reached at a condition of strong migration. Beyond this point, the energy decreases again. This gain is found to be due to the decrease of the energy radiated by the bubble pulse.

The behavior of the explosion bubble in contact with a rigid bottom was investigated on a small scale using high speed photography. The experiments were carried out in a vacuum tank with 0.2-gram charges fired above a 2-inch thick aluminum plate. Test conditions were varied by small increments so that a complex sequence of changing bubble behavior--from bubbles which remained intact on the bottom, to bubbles which split into two or more parts, to bubbles which separated from the bottom intact--was observed. A qualitative description of the bubble behavior along with its dimensions at maximum volume and--for strongly migrating bubbles--at minimum volume is presented in dimensionless form as a function of the inverse Froude number, the amplitude of oscillation, and the distance to the water surface. The qualitative behavior appears to be different from that observed with HE field tests on cratering bottoms. Other factors being equal, there appears to be a greater tendency for a bubble to stick to a cratering bottom.

Model underwater explosion tests were conducted in a test tank accelerated at up to 190 gravities on a 35-ft radius centrifuge. High speed movies were made of the explosion phenomena. The effects of tank size, air pressure, acceleration, and charge depth on the explosion characteristics were determined and several methods of using the scaling laws were compared. Models of specific prototype explosions were fired. Results indicated that three criteria scaling provided scaled measurements closely approximating their full scale equivalents, i. e., sizes of successive bubble maxima, successive periods of oscillation, and migration. Explosion Product Redistribution Mechanisms For Scaled Migrating Underwater Explosion Bubbles written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1966 with categories.

A submerged gold wire was electrically exploded to simulate a very deep underwater nuclear detonation. These small-scale tests were conducted in a test tank in which the air pressure may be varied to obtain various strengths of buoyant bubble migration. The mechanics of explosion bubble formation, pulsation, and migration are discussed, and relevant relationships are derived for scaling large-yield bubble behavior in the laboratory by variation of environmental parameters. The mechanisms by which the explosion products, initially at the bubble center during the first cycle, are redistributed by bubble bottom collapse, compression, reexpansion, and migration, are investigated. The experimental technique involved physically sampling the bubble and its environment at the second bubble maximum to define the extent and nature of explosion product re-distribution. Three different shot conditions were investigated, corresponding to a 'rest-point' condition, a condition characterized by slight upward migration, and one characterized by strong upward migration. In all cases, it was found that most (77 to 94%) of the explosion products are lost to the environment by the time of the second bubble maximum. The probable mechanisms for this loss are discussed, and rules are derived for application of these results to full-scale underwater bursts.

The theory of the migration of the bubble formed by the gaseous products of an underwater explosion is review, particular care being taken to state the assumptions involved and to indicate their validity. The theory is then compared with the experimental data available at the Underwater Explosives Laboratory by graphical mean. The comparison show that the theory correctly predicts the migration for charges weighing less than 25 lbs but predicts too great a migration for larger charges except when the larger charges are very deep.

Excerpt from Underwater Explosion Bubbles III: The Effects of the Surface and the Bottom on the Shape and Motion of the Bubble In our first report, Underwater Explosion Bubbles I, [l], we considered a compressible liquid and showed that the oscillations would then be damped. In our second report, Underwater Explosion Bubbles II, we considered gravity and showed how it would effect the shape of the bubble and also cause it to rise. In the present report we consider the effects of the water surface and bottom in addition to gravity, and show how they effect the shape and motion of the bubble.
