A rediscovered modern classic: a life-affirming account of one man's journey into blindness 'A gift to the whole of humanity' Cathy Rentzenbrink Days before the birth of his first son, writer and academic John M. Hull started to go blind. He would lose his sight entirely, unable to distinguish any sense of light or shadow. Isolated and claustrophobic, he sank into a deep depression. Soon, he had forgotten what his wife and daughter looked like. In Notes on Blindness, John reveals his profound sense of loss, his altered perceptions of time and space, of waking and sleeping, love and companionship. With astonishing lucidity of thought and no self-pity, he describes the horror of being faceless, and asks what it truly means to be a husband and father. And eventually, he finds a new way of experiencing the world, of seeing the light. Based on John's diaries recorded on audio tape, this is a profoundly moving, wise and life-affirming account of one man's journey into blindness. 'Poignant and wise' Andrew Solomon Published in partnership with Wellcome Collection.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I have been a registered blind person for nearly three years. My final eye operation took place on 1 August. I can no longer see anything, and I am now totally blind. My dreams continue to be pictorial. #2 I had the white cane, yet I did not have it. I could not move without a sort of substitute for the cane, yet I could see the reactions of the people around me. I had lost something which I would need when I met Marilyn. Loss of the cane was not only the loss of my ability to find her, but also the loss of something deeper, potency. #3 I have a dream in which I am walking along a river valley. I am on a walking holiday. I experiment, looking this way and that, and find that I can get a sufficient sense of the place to move freely and enjoy the scenery. #4 I could still manage, as long as it didn't get any worse. I felt like a sailor far out at sea on an inky, black night, with one star to guide me. When I reached the lamppost, I could dimly make out the next little light.

What are the distinctive characteristics of dyslexia? How much progress has been made in discovering the causes of dyslexia? What are the latest ideas on ways in which dyslexics can be helped? It is just over a hundred years since Dr Pringle Morgan published his famous account of Percy, a boy of 14 who could 'only with difficulty spell out words of one syllable', who wrote his name as 'Precy' and 'did not notice the mistake until his attention was called to it more than once'. Yet 'the schoolmaster who taught him for some years says that he would be the smartest lad in the school if the instruction were entirely oral'. Dyslexia: A Hundred Years On is an overview of the field. It traces the historical influences and examines the contributions of various disciplines. The new edition (1998) is a complete re-write of the original book and brings accounts of research fully up to date. There are also new chapters which report on new areas of research and raise questions about the different forms which dyslexia can take in different languages. The book also looks afresh at assessment, teaching approaches, and counselling. This book is an invaluable resource for trainee and practising teachers including special needs teachers; professionals and lay persons interested in dyslexia; psychologists, doctors, health visitors and college students (particularly those in the field of psychology, education, and linguistics).

Mathilde Blind Selected Fin De Si Cle Poetry And Prose written by James Diedrick and has been published by MHRA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-12 with Poetry categories.

Mathilde Blind’s contributions to the New Woman and Decadent movements in the 1880s and 1890s placed her at the centre of fin-de-siècle literary culture. She rose to prominence in the early 1870s, both as an expert on and proponent of the poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley and as one of the few women writers published in the Dark Blue (1871–73), an influential journal that featured the work of Britain’s leading Pre-Raphaelites and aesthetes. By the late 1880s, she had established close associations with key figures of England’s emergent Decadent communities, from Vernon Lee and Rosamund Marriott Watson to Oscar Wilde and Arthur Symons. When her Dramas in Miniature appeared in 1891, she was fusing aestheticism and Decadence so distinctively in her poetry that Symons evoked Charles Baudelaire in calling the dramatic monologues in the volume ‘flowers of evil’. Her career thus highlights the connections between mid-Victorian aestheticism and late-century Decadence. It also serves as an important corrective to the male-focused narratives that long dominated accounts of these movements. In addition, and because Blind was born in Germany of Jewish parents and part of a community of exiled European radicals, her poetry and prose alike are characterized by a transnational, cosmopolitan outlook that ranges across national borders and consistently engages with Continental writers and ideas. This new edition for the first time brings together the three major volumes of poetry Blind published between 1889 and 1895 alongside a critical introduction and explanatory notes. Because she was also an active reviewer and essayist throughout her career, it includes a selection of her reviews as well as her essay ‘Shelley’s View of Nature Contrasted with Darwin’s’, which serves as an important supplement to her 1889 volume The Ascent of Man. The edition also features a selection of critical responses to Blind’s writing by leading late-Victorian poets and critics.

First Published in 1988. The reader is invited to explore this collection of early German papers and not to analyze the work through a comparison with the present but to approach it with a relaxation of bias that extends a new hearing to old ideas. The reader may be surprised to see how little has changed in the association or callosal theory of apraxia since this review by Liepmann. Of interest is the care with which Liepmann studied his patients and the ingenious anatomical accounts.
