"This report examines how deep, austerity-motivated cuts to the welfare system, exacerbated by the introduction of the Universal Credit system and other changes, have left many families with children in England going hungry and dependent on food aid from charities. Many of these families are single parent households led by women. Human Rights Watch found that the UK government is failing to meet its duty under human rights law to ensure the right to adequate food."--Publisher website.

Burnt by Democracy traces the political ascendance of neoliberalism and its effects on youth. The book explores democracy and citizenship as described in interviews with over forty young people – ages 16 to 30 – who have either experienced homelessness or identify as an activist, living in five liberal democracies: Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Highlighting significant cuts to social and affordable housing, astronomical increases in the costs of higher education, and the transformation and erosion of state benefits systems, Jacqueline Kennelly argues that democracy’s decline is not occurring because young people are apathetic, or focused on informal politics, or unaware of their civic duties. Rather, it is because of collective misunderstanding about how democracy is actually structured, how individuals learn to participate, and how growing wealth inequality has undermined the capacity of those at the bottom to meaningfully advocate for changes that might improve their conditions. Against a vivid and often heart-breaking backdrop of stories from young people struggling to survive and thrive under conditions of ever-expanding state retrenchment and inequality, Burnt by Democracy makes a timely and impassioned plea for protecting and strengthening democracy by truly levelling the playing field for all.

Pandemics are disruptive. Thus, there is a need to prepare and plan actions in advance for identifying, assessing, and responding to such events to manage uncertainty and support sustainable livelihood and wellbeing. A detailed assessment of a continuously evolving situation needs to take place, and several aspects must be brought together and examined before the declaration of a pandemic even happens. Various health organizations; crisis management bodies; and authorities at local, national, and international levels are involved in the management of pandemics. There is no better time to revisit current approaches to cope with these new and unforeseen threats. As countries must strike a fine balance between protecting health, minimizing economic and social disruption, and respecting human rights, there has been an emerging interest in lessons learned and specifically in revisiting past and current pandemic approaches. Such approaches involve strategies and practices from several disciplines and fields including healthcare, management, IT, mathematical modeling, and data science. Using data science to advance in-situ practices and prompt future directions could help alleviate or even prevent human, financial, and environmental compromise, and loss and social interruption via state-of-the-art technologies and frameworks. Data Science Advancements in Pandemic and Outbreak Management demonstrates how strategies and state-of-the-art IT have and/or could be applied to serve as the vehicle to advance pandemic and outbreak management. The chapters will introduce both technical and non-technical details of management strategies and advanced IT, data science, and mathematical modelling and demonstrate their applications and their potential utilization within the identification and management of pandemics and outbreaks. It also prompts revisiting and critically reviewing past and current approaches, identifying good and bad practices, and further developing the area for future adaptation. This book is ideal for data scientists, data analysts, infectious disease experts, researchers studying pandemics and outbreaks, IT, crisis and disaster management, academics, practitioners, government officials, and students interested in applicable theories and practices in data science to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from future pandemics and outbreaks.

Against Critical Thinking In Health Social Care And Social Work written by Tom Grimwood and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-08 with Philosophy categories.

This book stages a provocative dialogue between social work, health and social care and contemporary philosophy in order to inform theory and practice in a complex and challenging world. Today, the social world is marked by deep-rooted complexities, tensions and challenges. Health workers and social workers are constantly reminded to employ critical thinking to navigate this world through their practice. But given how many of these challenges pose significant problems for the theories that these subjects have traditionally drawn upon, should we now be critical of critical thinking – its assumptions, its basis and its aspirations – itself? Arguing that health and social work theory must reconsider its deep-rooted assumptions about criticality in order to navigate complex neoliberalism, post-truth and the relationship between language and late capitalism, it examines how the fusion of theory and practice can re-imagine critical thinking for health, social care and social work. It will be of interest to all scholars, students and professionals of social work and health and social care.

Food Charity And The Psychologisation Of Poverty written by Christian Möller and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-30 with Psychology categories.

This book offers a unique discursive perspective on the rapid rise of food charity and how food poverty has emerged as a symptom of deeper problems requiring psychological intervention. Christian Möller explores how new anti-poverty programmes and advice cultures are psychologising poverty by locating causes and solutions inside the mind rather than in the outside world, and considers the political stakes in citizens becoming subjects of charity. Drawing extensively on Foucault alongside feminist and critical theory, the book puts forward an overdue challenge to the pervasive effects of a psychology, which limits our thinking about poverty with promises of development, happiness and resilience, but leaves social inequalities intact. Möller argues for returning critical psychology to praxis to address social injustices and inequalities. Challenging common assumptions about food charity as a symptom of a retreating welfare state, he shows how power is exercised and knowledge is produced in these spaces of care and community. Also featuring direct applications of concepts to the real-world example of food banks, the book helps set out practical guidance for students and researchers designing empirical projects in critical psychology. Drawing on original research and interviews with managers and volunteers, this text is fascinating reading for students and academics interested in critical psychology, and the relationship between charity, poverty and social exclusion.

The Oxford Handbook Of Jane Addams written by Patricia M. Shields and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-11 with Philosophy categories.

Jane Addams stands as perhaps one of the most prominent female voices in social theory of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While built through books, essays, journal articles, and speeches, her intellectual legacy has seldom been recognized as academic by contemporary audiences. Yet, over the last forty years, her contributions to sociology, philosophy, conceptions of democracy, inquiry, feminism, care ethics, community engagement, social ethics, community engagement, peace, municipal governance, social justice, and more have emerged and received traction in the scholarly literature. The Oxford Handbook of Jane Addams is a selective collection of original analyses offered by an international group of social and political theorists who have contributed to the burgeoning field of Addams Studies. This Handbook is a testament to the maturity of contemporary Jane Addams studies. Less than a half-century ago, such a scholarly collection would have been considered unwarranted. Despite intellectually influencing her contemporaries, Addams was marginalized as an original thinker for much of the 20th century. Today, a resurgence of academic work led by feminist scholars such as Mary Jo Deegan and Charlene Haddock Seigfried has restored Addams to her rightful place as an essential intellectual pioneer with ongoing significance. This collection pays particular attention to her contributions to scholarly fields of sociology and philosophy as well as to more professional disciplines of public administration and social work. Furthermore, this volume signifies Addams's global impact as scholars from all over the world contribute to the tapestry of her intellectual legacy. The 38 chapters in this volume are divided into six sections: Addams, Democracy and Social Theory; Addams and Her Contemporaries; Addams Across Disciplines; Addams, Peace and International Relations; Addams on Knowledge and Methods; and Addams and Social Practice. A major focus of The Oxford Handbook of Jane Addams is how Addams's insights remain relevant when confronting today's social challenges.

The purpose of this book is to tell others to follow their dreams. There is nothing one can’t achieve if one sets one’s mind to achieving and if one is focused and works hard toward it. The universe is waiting for us to ask so that it can give to us. “Ask and it shall be given you,” said the wisest sage that has ever lived (Matthew 7:7, NIV). As parents, we all make mistakes and unwittingly hurt our children, alienating them from us. I can say with confidence that it does not have to remain so.
