Java is never what it seems to be. It is lush and beautiful, yet the volcanoes that dotted the island from west to east clearly hid the explosive power in its belly, often exploding as if to remind those living nearby that there are powers bigger than any human can muster. The Javanese, the largest tribe residing on the island also reflect this hidden dichotomy. Calm and pleasant and yet on occasion had been known to savagely killed thousands of its own for the same of ideology or religion. Most Javanese avowed to be Muslims, yet older Hindu-Buddhist rituals are often performed without question. This inability to break with the past makes the Javanese often derided by people from other tribes as non Muslims as Noto encountered later. Noto was facing an uncertain future after losing both his parents during the troubled year of 1965, yet Noto was able to move through life with relative ease; succeeding in everything he did through his sheer determination, cunning, and, very likely, the intelligence with which he was born. Following his instinct, he chose to enter the Army Transport Unit after graduating first in his class at the Indonesian National Military Academy to the dismay of the Superintendent of the Academy. His instinct was proofed right when he defeated and captured a rebel leader and all his troops with a rag tag group of Indonesian army mechanics soon after his arrival in the trouble spot; a feat which earned him swift battle-field promotion from Second Lieutenant to Major and attention from the new Army Chief of Staff. While on leave from the army for a scheduled R&R, he accidentally unravel the mystery of whom his parents were. It eventually led Noto to the palace, where the Sultan had been forewarned of his arrival through the Court Recorders unusual dream. The Court Recorder had told him more than ten months earlier that in his dream someone kept on saying saying: The golden river that flows from the north will bring order to the kingdom The spiritual aspect of the premonition which foretold his arrival and the revelation of Notos ealier encounter with the Goddess of the Southern Ocean (Nyai Roro Kidul) marked Noto as a special person; someone to be reckoned with.

The wedding of the century between Noto and Yanti was supposed to make the tie between the two kingdoms that much closer, yet it also makes the people of Solo realize just how well-off the people of Jogya truly are. They have their beloved sultan actually working for them, managing the province ably, while the sunan of Solo is basically powerless outside the palace wall. The people demanded that the two kingdoms be merged. The solution made Noto the crown prince of both kingdoms, a position that will eventually make him the king of the new kingdom, the Kingdom of New Mataram. Notos struggle with Nyai Roro Kidul escalated as he proceeded to destroy all the ill-gotten accursed weapons in the armories of Jogya and Solo. Notos attempt to rid of superstitions from among the Javanese while not falling into the clasp of Muslim fundamentalism forced him to thread a fine line guided by several of his elders.

One day, the regent of a district in Central Java noticed that some of the religious schools in his area have become less tolerant of other more moderate Muslim populace, which are more common in Indonesia. Upon closer examination, the regent discovered that the Uztads (teachers) are Wahabis from Saudi Arabia who have somehow gained control of those schools. It seems that the ultraconservative Wahabis are planning to change the way the people practice their religion by force if necessary. The regent, together with Noto, who is the crown prince of the kingdom as well as the military commander of the region, decided to quietly act to rid these harmful foreign influences. To make sure that they have thoroughly dealt with the problem, the regent decided afterward to send one of his disciples to Saudi Arabia to rid those who sent the Uztads to Java. Reality and spiritual existence for some people in Java often coexist. As the future king of Mataram, it seems that Notos life and progress have been closely monitored by Nyai Roro Kidul (the goddess of the Southern Ocean). Interestingly, Notos attempt to have a son has attracted the karmas of five of his elder advisorsnone of them has a sonas well as the Nyai. When his son was born, a lightning bolt shattered the window of the hospital room. Miraculously, the five elder advisors happened to be there to protect the mother and the baby from harm. Noto felt certain that the Nyai had sensed the birth of his son and caused the lightning to strike as a warning. Again, when Noto was celebrating his troops victory during an annual war game, the Nyai unleashed a tsunami that flooded the area, thus killing several soldiers as well as countless numbers of large and smaller animals. Furious with what the Nyai had done, Noto decided to call her out and confront her. After a long conversation with the Nyai, Noto was able to convince the Nyai that she is not as almighty as she thinks. As an honest leader, Notos anticorruption stands created a crisis that threatens the stability of the government. With his brother, Dharmawan, and with the help of a computer hacker, they decided to manipulate evidences to convict those they believed are guilty. One of the corrupt members of the parliament who was eventually implicated turned out to have been influenced by a foreign power, a serious crime that made him a target of a military tribunal. The tribunal convicted him to death. However, when he tried to make a deal with the police by revealing who was responsible for the hotel bombing that killed many people several years earlier, he was killed in his jail cell. All his colleagues point the Muslim Fundamentalist group as being responsible for his killing because he was about to implicate them for the bombing. By then, the public has had enough of the antics of the Muslim Fundamentalist group and decided to barricade them inside their own headquarters and then set the place ablaze.

It is 1751, and nine-year-old Wulan finds herself half a world away from her home in Java: torn from her adored grandparents, her chattering cousins, the sounds and smells of the landscape that she loves. She and her father, Parto, are enslaved on a Cape Colony farmstead, with little hope of returning home. In this new world they hold fast to their Javanese identity and beliefs while, through their shared suffering, they forge bonds with the multicultural community whose descendants would come to be known as the Cape Malays. “Isna Marifa has extended the geographical and emotional reach of the modern Indonesian novel. The result is an original and captivating story that has launched the career of a new and promising literary voice.” A visit to South Africa led to Isna Marifa’s commitment to telling the story of the Javanese who were taken to South Africa in the colonial era. Her début, Mountains More Ancient, is the first novel to focus on the Indonesian experience of slavery in South Africa, illuminating this history of unfreedom through a timeless story of love, loss, and longing.

The Institutionalization Of Educational Cinema written by Marina Dahlquist and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-01 with Performing Arts categories.

The potential of films to educate has been crucial for the development of cinema intended to influence culture, and is as important as conceptions of film as a form of art, science, industry, or entertainment. Using the concept of institutionalization as a heuristic for generating new approaches to the history of educational cinema, contributors to this volume study the co-evolving discourses, cultural practices, technical standards, and institutional frameworks that transformed educational cinema from a convincing idea into an enduring genre. The Institutionalization of Educational Cinema examines the methods of production, distribution, and exhibition established for the use of educational films within institutions–such as schools, libraries, and industrial settings in various national and international contexts and takes a close look at the networks of organizations, individuals, and government agencies that were created as a result of these films' circulation. Through case studies of educational cinemas in different North American and European countries that explore various modes of institutionalization of educational film, this book highlights the wide range of vested interests that framed the birth of educational and nontheatrical cinema.

From Jail to Jail is the political autobiography of Sutan Ibrahim gelar Tan Malaka, an enigmatic and colorful political thinker of twentieth-century Asia, who was one of the most influential figures of the Indonesian Revolution. Variously labeled a communist, Trotskyite, and nationalist, Tan Malaka managed to run afoul of nearly every political group and faction involved in the Indonesian struggle for independence. During his decades of political activity, he spent periods of exile and hiding in nearly every country in Southeast Asia. As a Marxist who was expelled from and became a bitter enemy of his country’s Communist Party and as a nationalist who was imprisoned and murdered by his own government’s forces as a danger to its anticolonial struggle, Tan Malaka was and continues to be soaked in contradiction and controversy. Translated by Helen Javis and with a new introduction from Harry A. Poeze, this edition of From Jail to Jail contextualizes the life and political accomplishments of Tan Malaka in one of the few known autobiographies by a Marxist of this political era and region.
