Until recently a neglected disease syndrome, diarrhea is responsible for many millions of infant deaths in developing countries. The result of a 1987 symposium, this volume reflects advances in the aetiology of diarrhea while addressing such puzzling problems as the difficulty of growing viruses in a controlled setting. The volume is deliberately restricted to so-called ``novel'' diarrhea viruses and is not concerned with ``classical'' rotaviruses, which have formed the basis of previous symposia. Articles concentrate on: atypical rotaviruses; the enteric adenoviruses; small round viruses such as astroviruses, caliciviruses and Norwalk virus; and the Berne and Breda viruses, suggested as a new family Toroviridae. The contributions come from an interdisciplinary mix of virologists (both human and veterinary), epidemiologists, molecular biologists, and pathologists.

Rapid progress has been made in basic research of gastroenteritis viruses as well as their diagnosis and epidemiology, due to advent of highly sensitive and specific molecular detection techniques to analyse clinical materials. It is at the intersection of basic and applied clinical virology that this book wishes to make a contribution, directed towards the molecular analysis of viruses causing gastroenteritis as well as aspects of their pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, and vaccine-related research. The main emphasis is on data relating to rotaviruses, caliciviruses, astroviruses, and enteric adenoviruses. In addition, aspects of research on viruses less frequently causing diarrhoea (picornaviruses, toroviruses, picobirnaviruses, a.o.) are also presented.

The causes of diarrhea are very diverse and include infections, allergies, chronic inflammatory diseases, tumors and inborn errors of intestinal digestion and transport. The global importance of diarrheal deaths and illnessess, as well as the rapid technical advances that have occurred in this field, have generated a vast amount of literature that is not easily accessible to most practicing doctors. This single volume brings this literature together in a logical, concise and clear manner that puts diarrhea and its management into a clinical perspective. Practicing physicians, pediatricians, internists and senior students will find this book of particular interest; it will also be useful for professionals in public health, community medicine, nursing and microbiology who want a comprehensive understanding of diarrhea. Authors from Europe, Britain, Australia, and South America bring authoritative views on this subject, including its importance in developing countries and disadvantaged communities.

Diarrhoea is a clinical symptom characterised by an increase in the volume, wateriness, or frequency of bowel movements. Acute diarrhoea is a common cause of death in developing countries and the second most common cause of infant deaths world-wide. The loss of fluids through diarrhoea can cause severe dehydration which is one cause of death in diarrhoea sufferers. The causes of diarrhoea can be infectious or non-infectious. Infectious causes are due to bacteria, viruses, or parasites. This book presents research on diarrheal viruses; cholera in Africa; the pathogenesis of Clostridium-difficile associated diarrhea; faecal organic anions in calf diarrhoea and the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea.

Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death globally, particularly among children and young adults. The spread of new pathogens and the threat of antimicrobial resistance pose particular challenges in combating these diseases. Major Infectious Diseases identifies feasible, cost-effective packages of interventions and strategies across delivery platforms to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, malaria, adult febrile illness, viral hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases. The volume emphasizes the need to effectively address emerging antimicrobial resistance, strengthen health systems, and increase access to care. The attainable goals are to reduce incidence, develop innovative approaches, and optimize existing tools in resource-constrained settings.
