Fin dal primo romanzo, L’esclusa (1901), i personaggi della narrativa pirandelliana tracciano il grafico della solitudine e dell’alienazione dell’individuo di fronte a una realtà contraddittoria, inafferrabile, inconoscibile, priva di punti di riferimento. Ognuno a suo modo esemplifica o denuncia la sconcertante inquietudine, lo scacco, la sconfitta che nascono dall’impossibilità di sapere, di prevedere, di conoscere la verità dell’esistenza propria e altrui. E l’autore delinea questa accidentata geografia di naufragi esistenziali con quella «pietà spietata» che rappresenta l’ingrata ricchezza della sua visione umoristica, in cui convivono dolore e riso, partecipazione e distacco. Nelle Novelle per un anno, che Pirandello iniziò a raccogliere in volume nel 1922, lo sguardo penetrante dello scrittore agrigentino affronta il grigiore della normalità, dell’esistenza quotidiana, squarcia le cortine del perbenismo, frantuma le rigide maschere che nascondono i veri, incerti lineamenti, si muove in una varietà multiforme di ambienti, sonda le profondità della psiche, incrina le false certezze. E libero, imprevedibile come la vita, mosso dal suo particolare umorismo, trascrive, senza aderire a moduli esterni, la sofferenza dell’individuo destituito di ogni orgoglio, in conflitto con se stesso e con gli altri, disorientato da una sorte sempre mutevole. Maschere nude raccoglie il grande percorso teatrale di Pirandello: dall’esordio del 1910, con i due atti unici Lamorsa e Lumie di Sicilia, attraverso quel momento culminante rappresentato, nel 1921, da Sei personaggi in cerca d’autore, in cui il teatro borghese cede il posto a un dramma che si costruisce paradossalmente nella sua stessa impossibilità di costruzione, fino al teatro «dei miti», e alla grande visione tragica ed epica del commiato in forma di capolavoro de I giganti della montagna, in cui i toni drammatici si stemperano nel racconto sorridente di una favola, e la «servetta sveltissima » di Pirandello, che «si chiama Fantasia», raggiunge forse il suo più alto momento espressivo. - Tutti i romanzi: • L’esclusa • Il turno • Il fu Mattia Pascal • Suo marito • I vecchi e i giovani • Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore • Uno, nessuno e centomila - Novelle per un anno - Maschere nude Luigi Pirandello nato ad Agrigento nel 1867, si laureò in filologia a Bonn nel 1891. Iniziò la sua carriera letteraria e teatrale quando Capuana lo introdusse nel mondo culturale romano. Dal 1897 al 1922 si dedicò all’insegnamento. Nel 1934 gli fu assegnato il premio Nobel per la letteratura. Morì a Roma nel 1936. La Newton Compton ha pubblicato, oltre a molte opere in volumi singoli, anche le raccolte Novelle per un anno, Tutti i romanzi e I romanzi, le novelle e il teatro.

Il ritorno in Sicilia e l’incontro con la dura realtà meridionale indirizzarono dal 1875 la sua produzione più matura all’analisi oggettiva e alla resa narrativa di tale realtà.
