This study of Blasco Ibanez's lengthiest acknowledged work demonstrates that it is a key text in the trajectory of his novels and in his evolution as a writer, one that marks significant differences both with those texts which precede it and those which follow, beginning with Los cuatro jinetes del Apocalipsis (1916). These differences are found in the novel's themes, style, narrative technique, structure, and even in the makeup of its main characters. Blasco is presented as a highly proficient weaver of tales who modifies his narrative technique to fit the needs of each chapter's content and context. His novel stresses the importance of music and other sounds, and it highlights the use of mystery/suspense and juxtaposition as important aspects of his technique. Structurally, Los argonautas is found to be an open-ended novel which looks towards the future and has neither a rousing climax nor a traditional conclusion, a text whose openness to the unexpected encourages the very late appearance of characters, which contributes to its realistic slice-of-life feel. Los argonautas exhibits an increased interest on Blasco's part in such abstract issues as the relationship of life/history with art/literature. And its main characters are not Blasco's prototypical assertive fighters participating in the struggle for life and/or ideals. In terms of narrative technique (dual narration, where events in the present evoke those of the past), the makeup of central characters (laconic, hedonistic, and passive by nature), and style (where the predominant esthetic is Impressionism), Los argonautas is viewed as Blasco's first attempt at writing an evocative notel of Impressionist ilk. In sum, the books' chapters illustrate how Blasco evolves as a thinker and as an artist in Los argonautas, and while each reaches its own conclusions, together they demonstrate that this novel merits further study. Dr. Christopher L. Anderson is a Professor of Spanish and Comparative Literature at the University of Tulsa, where he teaches courses in the Spanish Novel of the 19th, 20th, and 21st Centuries and the Spanish Cinema. He is co-editor of the Valencia-based journal, Revista de Estudios sobre Blasco Ibanez / Journal of Blasco Ibanez Studies. This is his second book with Juan de la Cuesta Hispanic Monographs."

Jellyfish are one of the most conspicuous animals in our oceans and are renowned for their propensity to form spectacular blooms. The unique features of the biology and ecology of jellyfish that enable them to bloom also make them successful invasive species and, in a few places around the world, jellyfish have become problematic. As man increasingly populates the world’s coastlines, interactions between humans and jellyfish are rising, often to the detriment of coastal-based industries such as tourism, fishing and power generation. However we must not lose sight of the fact that jellyfish have been forming blooms in the oceans for at least 500 million years, and are an essential component of normal, healthy ocean ecosystems. Here many of the world’s leading jellyfish experts explore the science behind jellyfish blooms. We examine the unique features of jellyfish biology and ecology that cause populations to ‘bloom and bust’, and, using case studies, we show why jellyfish are important to coastal and ocean ecosystem function. One of the secrets of the immense power exercised by the novels of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez is that they are literary projections of his dynamic personality. Not only the style, but the book, is here the man. This is especially true of those of his works in which the thesis element predominates, and in which the famous author of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse appears as a novelist of ideas-in-action. It is, of course, possible to divide his works into the "manners" or "periods" so dear to the literary cataloguers, and it may thus be indicated that there are such fairly distinct genres as the regional novel, the sociological tale and the psychological study; a convenient classification of this sort would place among the regional novels such masterpieces as La Barraca and Cañas y Barro,—among the novels of purpose such powerful writings as La Catedral, La Bodega and Sangre y Arena,—among the psychological studies the introspective La Maja Desnuda. The war novels, including The Four Horsemen and the epic Mare Nostrum, would seem to form another group. Such non-literary diversions as grouping and regrouping, however, had perhaps best be left to those who relish the task. It is for the present more important to note that the passionate flame of a deeply human purpose welds the man's literary labors into a larger unity. His pen, as his person, has been given over to humanity. He is as fearless in his denunciation of evil as he is powerful in his description of it; he has lived his ideas as well as fashioned them into enduring documents; he reveals not only a new Spain, but a new world. While Blasco Ibáñez does not desire to be known as regional novelist—nor does a complete view of his numerous works justify such a narrow description—he[Pg vi] has nevertheless in his earlier books made such effective and artistic use of regional backgrounds that some critics have found this part of his production best.
