Edgar Allan Poe kennen we in de eerste plaats van zijn fantastische verhalen en van zijn poëzie ('The Raven'), maar hij wordt ook 'de vader van het detectiveverhaal' genoemd. Die eretitel dankt hij aan de creatie van het personage C. Auguste Dupin, een voorloper van Sherlock Holmes, die 'The Murders of the Rue Morgue' oplost, louter door een beroep te doen op zijn grijze hersencellen. Een tweede verhaal met Dupin in de hoofdrol, 'The Mystery of Marie Rogêt', is wellicht het eerste misdaadverhaal, gebaseerd op een 'true crime'. Het wordt algemeen beschouwd als een mindere Poe, omdat het meer weg heeft van een criminologisch essay dan van een verhaal. Bovendien heeft het een hoogst onbevredigend slot... alsof Edgar Allan Poe op het laatste moment terugdeinsde om de waarheid te vertellen. Geheel in de stijl van Poe, die ook al eens een fictie voor feiten durfde laten doorgaan en niet vies was van een literaire mystificatie of een 'hoax', wordt in 'Edgar Allan Poe, een moordzaak' een geweldige ontdekking gedaan. Eerst door het hoofdpersonage Isabel Daemen, en daarna door de anonieme verteller, mogelijk Bernauw zelf. Uit een vergeten Londens archief wordt immers het manuscript opgediept van de eerste, niet gepubliceerde versie van 'The Mystery of Marie Rogêt', waarin E.A. Poe nauwelijks verhuld zichzelf aanwijst als de dader van de moord op Mary Cecilia Rogers, in 1841, in New York... In zijn Voorwoord vertelt Patrick Bernauw hoe hij begin jaren 90 volop experimenteerde met 'faction', en zo een aardig succes scoorde met 'Mysteries van het Lam Gods'. Toch zag zijn toenmalige uitgever (Manteau) niet meteen brood in dit verhaal: 'Uiteindelijk werd de literair-historische detective als kort verhaal gepubliceerd in het literair tijdschrift De Brakke Hond (8ste jaargang nummer 32, december 1991). En ik nam het essay-gedeelte uit de roman op in een bundel, getiteld "Landru bestaat niet" (Manteau, 1992), samen met twee andere hybrides van feiten en fictie rond veronderstelde legendarische vrouwenmoordenaars. Behalve Henri Désiré Landru die driehonderd vrouwen aan zijn voeten zou gekregen hebben, van wie hij er op zijn minst tien vermoordde, passeerde ook Heer Halewijn nog de revue. Uit het raamverhaal heb ik vervolgens schaamteloos stukken gerecycleerd in "Het Bloed van het Lam" (2006). "Edgar Allan Poe, een moordzaak" was een poging tot het schrijven van een tijdsdocument, en dit in meer dan één opzicht. Zo wilde ik o.a. terugblikken op de late jaren 70 en vroege jaren 80 van de 20ste eeuw, en op de jongeman die stilaan echt wel volwassen was geworden. Door het boek een kwarteeuw in vrede te laten rusten op allerlei harde schijven, is het even goed een tijdsdocument geworden van de jaren 90. Bovenal is deze korte roman echter een product van de schrijver die ik toen nog niet was, maar wel hoopte te worden. En een getuigenis van de boeken die ik wilde gaan schrijven. Toen ik het verhaal herlas met het oog op een eventuele bewerking, kreeg ik al gauw het gevoel dat het interessanter kon zijn om het te publiceren als dit tijdsdocument, dan in die herwerkte 21ste eeuwse versie. Misschien heeft dat in eerste instantie te maken met mijn melancholisch temperament. Afijn, beste lezer(es), laten we zeggen dat je hierbij gewaarschuwd bent.'
