Among the fall-out from the obliteration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the seed of a new cultural phenomenon: a half century of writings which attempt to evaluate the cultural consequences of a nuclear technology whose most conspicuous legacy is the nuclear power station and weapons of mass destruction. Nuclear Criticism introduces a variety of analytical approaches to representations of nuclearism, ranging from official accounts of the first atomic test in 1945 to recent reports on a controversial shipment of plutonium to Japan. A relatively late intervention in this history is self-styled and theoretically sophisticated nuclear criticism whose assumptions and practices are here contextualized and examined.

This collection asks how we are to address the nuclear question in a post-Cold War world. Rather than a temporary fad, Nuclear Criticism perpetually re-surfaces in theoretical circles. This volume revolves around these dialogic moments of agreement and departure; refusing the silence of complacency, the authors renew this conversation while taking it in exciting new directions. As political paradigms shift and awareness of nuclear issues manifests in alternative forms, the collected essays establish groundwork for future generations caught in a perpetual struggle with legacies of the nuclear.

Today is a nuclear-powered era. Since 1945 nuclear technology has mutated into a cloud filtering human experiences. Despite the apparent end to the Cold War, nuclear technology remains a critical subject. This study constructs a contemporary framework to continue the project of nuclear criticism in a post-Cold War world to contribute to the discussion of nuclear issues. Building on a comprehensive review of critical nuclear discourse since 1945, this project suggests intertextual analysis of current nuclear discourse can encourage politically-meaningful public participation and can promote a better understanding of assumptions influencing the current shape of conversations concerning nuclear policy. It draws attention to a sphere of rhetoric directly affecting nuclear policy that critics have largely ignored. It builds on the work of nuclear criticism, updating and revising the project with a politically- enabling voice for a post-Cold War era. With this perspective for nuclear criticism, this study analyzes two current nuclear campaigns. The first involves the Department of Energy's Closing the Circle on the Splitting of the Atom as state-sponsored rhetoric reflecting a sustained influence of nuclearism. The second involves the Canberra Commission as a contemporary oppositional nuclear rhetor. The findings suggest successful management of nuclear resources rests with creating an inclusive public discussion and providing perpetual criticism articulating how literary and critical assumptions shape material and discursive action as humanity deals with a lingering nuclear legacy.

Risk Criticism is a study of literary and cultural responses to global environmental risk in an age of unfolding ecological catastrophe. In 2015, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists reset its iconic Doomsday Clock to three minutes to midnight, as close to the apocalypse as it has been since 1953. What pushed its hands was not just the threat of nuclear weapons, but also other global environmental risks that the Bulletin judged to have risen to the scale of the nuclear, including climate change and innovations in the life sciences. If we may once have believed that the end of days would come in a blaze of nuclear firestorm, we now suspect that the apocalypse may be much slower, creeping in as chemical toxins, climate change, or nano-technologies run amok. Taking inspiration from the questions raised by the Bulletin’s synecdochical “nuclear,” Risk Criticism aims to generate a hybrid form of critical practice that brings “nuclear criticism” into conversation with ecocriticism. An ethnographic study of anti-nuclear movement groups that both challenges assumptions of traditional social movement studies of strategic action and shows what can be gained through microanalysis of talk in meetings, this book advances social movement studies methodologically and theoretically through the application of a new method of sequential analysis. Drawing on both conversation analysis and objective hermeneutics, it builds on microanalysis to scale up from sequences of talk to meetings, from meetings to groups, and from groups to the anti-nuclear movement, thus addressing a common criticism of analyses of face-to-face interactions: that they fail to demonstrate how their findings are relevant for questions beyond the interaction itself and thus for a broader sociological audience. A demonstration of the ways in which strategic deliberations by activists are subject to dynamics of face-to-face interaction, Talking Collective Action shows how groups adopt different styles of planning to engage with their environment and affect the groups’ development over time.
