This abridged (printed only in black & white, so more affordable) version is based upon the more detailed and advanced 2nd edition of the original 'unabridged' (462 page, blue cover and in-colour) publication on the clear basis that many readers are seeking a less advanced text. Also, at this level, we have opportunity, with a lighter text (just 298 pages), to provide a serious nuclear engineering publication but at a very favourable price. Within we shall discuss: nuclear & atomic physics and technology, nuclear fission, fusion, radiation, shielding and instrumentation, thermal power plant detailed design, commercial nuclear reactor types and characteristics, nuclear accidents, process safety and systems, critical mass calculations and fuel pitch optimization, analysis of reactor core design geometries, fuel poisoning, reactor stability, fuel manufacture, chemistry and enrichment, metallurgy of reactor materials, fuel loading, burn-up calculations, economics and future prospects. With anticipation, this abridged version has been heavily focussed to a more reactor and power plant engineering, systems and technology perspective (65% of the contents) but at the same time still incorporating the essential physics (32%) and mathematical-physics (3%) fundamentals; any less than this would render an inadequate understanding. In this context this abridged version is ideal for those who are students of, or qualified in, engineering, physics or chemistry or for those in possession of pre-university level physics and mathematics but who seek a rather excellent, impressive and quite fluent working knowledge of this subject that is very untypical of non-nuclear engineers. It is important to note here that much of the fundamental material concerning nuclear and reactor physics and its associated less advanced level of mathematics is retained from the unabridged edition as it would be impossible to properly understand this subject without this material. Hence, here we cater for those who desire to just understand the technology of nuclear power, if they so wish; but to really understand how it all works we must retain at least some of the deeper theory and so this material is, and must be, retained. For the benefit of the reader; the contents, list of illustrations and index include all materials as are available in the original full unabridged edition as marked throughout as 'UE'. The reader may then appreciate the additional subject matter and greater depth that would be required for fully comprehensive understanding as commensurate of that of the nuclear engineer. Given this, and the clear academic and investment advantages of the unabridged edition, then the reader may find the unabridged edition a more suitable text to study, albeit being proportionately more expensive (colour print and substantially extra and more advanced material), especially where deeper understanding is sought. This fuller unabridged edition is estimated to be equivalent to roughly half of an M.Sc.(Nucl Eng) course. This being said should the reader later desire to study further than presented herein then the unabridged edition seamlessly incorporates its additional material that is above and beyond as that provided in this abridged version.

Of all subjects the physics, engineering and technology of nuclear reactors is perhaps one of the most esoteric yet it plays a highly important role in most of our lives; and soon, without doubt, will become even more so. Because it is generally unknown means that it is often feared but it shouldn't be. Books that broach this subject often do so from either a most basic approach, leaving the enquiring mind wanting for more, or more often are designed specifically for students of nuclear engineering to a very advanced level and are therefore far too advanced for the level of interest of the non-nuclear student or first/second year nuclear undergraduate and often assume that the reader is already in possession of high level mathematics. This book sets out, at fast pace, to ease the reader into this subject at an elementary, further elementary and intermediate level but also addresses any theory from basic first principles that is often missing in other literature. Herein we explain this subject without missing out the necessary concomitant underlying concepts without which the student will remain forever wondering how. This book is also designed to suit, and is navigable at, all aspirational levels of study from basic technology to advanced physics. Within we shall discuss: nuclear & atomic physics and technology, nuclear fission, fusion, radiation, shielding and instrumentation, analysis of reactor core design geometries, critical mass calculations and fuel pitch optimization, fuel poisoning, reactor stability, reactor types and characteristics, nuclear accidents and safety, fuel manufacture, chemistry and enrichment, metallurgy of reactor materials, fuel loading and burn-up calculations. Further to this, substantial other material has been added given the need for wider engineering perspectives of power plant design, thermodynamics, thermal-hydraulics, engineering control theory and in introducing useful topics, including theory and techniques in linear analysis, for bridging into advanced reactor theory. This book is a highly illustrated, concise and comprehensive, practical and theoretical introduction to this high utility subject and also serves beyond its apparent cognitive application. It is designed to provide more than that of a textbook at the elementary/further elementary/intermediate level. If you are a student of physics, mechanical, chemical, electrical or environmental engineering, mathematics or chemistry, are a naval officer or just academically or curiously minded who seeks a better understanding of this mysterious subject or if you are a first/second year nuclear engineering student then this book will get you straight in and help you succeed in understanding the fascinating world of nuclear energy.

Dr. Samuel Glasstone, the senior author of the previous editions of this book, was anxious to live until his ninetieth birthday, but passed away in 1986, a few months short of this milestone. I am grateful for the many years of stimulation received during our association, and in preparing this edition have attempted to maintain his approach. Previous editions of this book were intended to serve as a text for students and a reference for practicing engineers. Emphasis was given to the broad perspective, particularly for topics important to reactor design and oper ation, with basic coverage provided in such supporting areas as neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and materials. This, the Fourth Edition, was prepared with these same general objectives in mind. However, during the past three decades, the nuclear industry and university educational programs have matured considerably, presenting some challenges in meeting the objec tives of this book. Nuclear power reactors have become much more complex, with an ac companying growth in supporting technology. University programs now offer separate courses covering such basic topics as reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, and materials. Finally, the general availability of inexpensive xv xvi Preface powerful micro-and minicomputers has transformed design and analysis procedures so that sophisticated methods are now commonly used instead of earlier, more approximate approaches.
