El material que integra este volumen intenta contextualizar la enseñanza de las lenguas en una realidad europea e internacional, profundamente cambiada en los últimos años. Se reúnen aquí nueve trabajos de investigación y experiencia sobre la didáctica de las lenguas extranjeras en cinco lenguas diferentes: alemán, español, inglés, francés y portugués. Se trata de un conjunto de lenguas relevantes en la dinámica multilingüe de la comunidad europea que representan un buen primer paso para la difusión del saber disciplinario según los criterios que hemos enunciado. Como producto editorial, entonces, pretende asumir el plurilingüismo como una realidad que ha cambiado las prácticas de la investigación en lingüística aplicada y didáctica de las lenguas extranjeras, en una situación en la que los viejos términos disciplinarios –bilingüismo, contrastividad, competencia cuasi nativa– quedan englobados y adquieren un significado que los distancia de la utopía y los acerca a una sustantividad que no tenían. Hablar de la didáctica de una lengua en la propia lengua facilita la comprensión de lo que de peculiar tiene esa lengua y amplifica el poder del discurso en su ámbito cultural. Es una acción sobre todo democrática, que permite llegar a un mayor número de lectores interesados que conocen la lengua que enseñan, pero tal vez desconozcan las lenguas en las que se hace ciencia. Con la lectura de estas páginas, los profesores y los aprendientes de lenguas extranjeras tendrán la oportunidad de acercarse de un modo más fértil al conocimiento de aspectos centrales de uso de la lengua meta.
