Este excelente libro, editado por Fabiola Pardo, sitúa el análisis de las migraciones internacionales latinoamericanas en el contexto de los debates teóricos, políticos y críticos de los estudios migratorios; abre distintos canales de investigación y constituye un aporte crítico e innovador -ya que inserta estos procesos en la complejidad de las dinámicas migratorias contemporáneas globales-; e incluye resultados de estudios sobre los principales países involucrados, lo que permite comparar y salir de los límites nacionales y regionales. En Europa la migración laboral ha hecho un aporte fundamental al desarrollo industrial y económico, y ha sido un factor estratégico determinante de las transformaciones de los mercados laborales y de las formas de producción. En la primera década del siglo XXI esta migración aumentó en todo el mundo sin que se hayan producido procesos de reconocimiento político o social. La migración laboral en Europa, obra de Fabiola Pardo -del Área de Conflicto y Dinámica Social del Centro de Investigación en Dinámica Social (CIDS), Facultad de Ciencias Sociales y Humanas- examina y evidencia el rol de los trabajadores migrantes en el desarrollo de las economías y de los mercados laborales en la Unión Europea, con un acercamiento al caso de los latinoamericanos en España. Sobre la base de investigaciones en este campo, se realiza un análisis histórico, teórico y político de la migración laboral y se destacan tanto las coyunturas que la determinan como las políticas que han estructurado su incorporación en las dinámicas laborales de los países receptores. Con este soporte teórico y el trabajo de campo en España, se analiza la integración de los trabajadores latinoamericanos en el mercado laboral y en la sociedad, a partir de los diferentes momentos de llegada, su composición, las políticas en curso y los efectos de la crisis económica del año 2008 en las condiciones sociales, laborales y de movilidad transnacional de los migrantes. This book traces Latin American migration to Europe since the 1970s. Focusing on Amsterdam, London, and Madrid, it examines the policies of integration in a comparative perspective that takes into account transnational, national, regional and local levels. It examines the entire mechanism that Latin American migrants confront in the European cities they settle, and provides readers with a theoretical framework on integration that addresses the concepts of multiculturalism, interculturality, transculturality and transnationalism. This work is based on rich qualitative data from in-depth interviews, focus groups and participant observation complemented by a substantial documentary and legislative analysis. It reveals that current policies are limited and migrants are excluded in most of the formal venues for integration. In addition, the book shows the many ways that migrants negotiate the constraints and imperatives of integration. In Western Europe today, immigrants are largely assuming the entire responsibility of their integration. This book provides readers with much needed insight into why European integration policies are not responding to the needs of immigrants nor to society as a whole.
