This open access book presents a condensed history of Sociology in Mexico from its origins, through to the middle of the 19th century and up to the present day. The book analyses the interaction between sociology and the main economic, political and social change in the country, including the 1910 Mexican Revolution, the main social movements, the role of the intellectual exiles from Spain and Latin America, and the participation of women, who have often remained invisible in the history of sociology. The book explores how sociological discourse played a fundamental role in the separation of secular and public education and the search for a ‘national project’ from 1868 onwards, despite the lack of an institute of social research until 1930; how sociology became an autonomous social science, led by a few intellectuals and public figures, as it became institutionalized in universities, and the effect this had on the development of the discipline; the influence of Marxism during the 1970s; and the progression from a process of specialization after the fall of the Berlin Wall to a new trend of working in collective projects with an increasing interdisciplinary perspective in the first decades of the 21st century.

Cuando las naves capitaneadas por Cristóbal Colón entraron a las aguas del mar Caribe, se inició uno de los procesos de aculturación inducida más complejos del planeta. Esta obra traza la continuidad de ese proceso efectuada a través de las políticas estatales implementadas en América Latina en relación con los pueblos indígenas. El indigenismo, como se conoció esa política, reconoce su origen en el Primer Congreso Indigenista Interamericano celebrado en la ciudad de Pátzcuaro, México, en 1940. Allí se sentaron las bases de instituciones y agencias gubernamentales que estarían atentas a la implementación de acciones orientadas hacia las poblaciones originarias. En este libro se exponen las claves históricas del indigenismo latinoamericano a través del estudio de los casos en México, Guatemala, Ecuador y Perú. A partir de estas experiencias, se reflexiona sobre la conflictiva relación entre los postulados y las políticas indigenistas, por un lado, y los procesos de construcción de Estados-nación, urgidos de afianzar culturas nacionales homogéneas, por otro.

La producción de conocimiento sobre la sociedad está sujeta a dificultades de todo tipo: desde el contexto social o académico específico –que condiciona qué y cómo se investiga– hasta situaciones de bloqueos propios de las disciplinas para desarrollar herramientas conceptuales que permitan hacer esa tarea. Una derivación posible de esto es quedar aprisionados en la coyuntura. Este libro propone partir de tales limitaciones para tratar de "ver más allá". Para ello, la invitación es a emprender un viaje interesado por algunos lugares y momentos en que la teoría social brindó un apoyo para esa tarea. Si la teoría es importante para diferenciar lo superficial de lo profundo, los cambios estructurales de aquellos más sujetos a la coyuntura, igualmente resulta clave para poder visualizar proyectos de sociedad. Con ese centro de atención, la invitación es también a transitar por algunos aportes contemporáneos que buscaron captar mutaciones a escala global de vasto alcance y generar a partir de estos algunas conexiones conceptuales con América Latina. Entre los temas que aparecen en ese camino no podría estar ausente el de la empresa privada convertida en referente social de la vida individual y colectiva y lo que supone en términos de colonización de la sociedad por el capital.

Las caravanas son la estrategia migratoria más reciente adoptada por las personas provenientes fundamentalmente de Centroamérica -si bien existen antecedentes - con una doble finalidad: escapar de las condiciones de diversas violencias, persecuciones, problemas medioambientales, pobreza y hambre de sus lugares de origen y, al mismo tiempo, enfrentar los crecientes riesgos y minimizar los costos que implica el tránsito por el territorio mexicano -secuestros, extorsiones, violaciones, etc-. A partir de la observación a través de un intenso trabajo de campo en las fronteras y en otros puntos del territorio mexicano, de numerosos testimonios de personas migrantes, de autoridades y funcionarios, y de defensoras de derechos humanos de quienes se encuentran en movilidad, las autoras y el autor de este libro analizan las distintas oleadas de caravanas y los cambios en los perfiles de quienes se desplazan, sus propósitos, así corno el impacto social que representan respecto a expresiones migratorias previas. Sitúa históricamente la evolución de la migración en/de tránsito por México y de la política migratoria mexicana para comprender las diversa respuestas políticas otorgadas a las caravanas acaecidas hasta diciembre de 2019, en un contexto de crecientes presiones del gobierno estadounidense. Adicionalmente, observa estos procesos desde el lente de las instituciones, sus funcionarios y operativos, para comprender la manera en que las subjetividades moldean la gestión de la migración en la era de las caravanas

During the 1930s, thousands of social scientists fled the Nazi regime or other totalitarian European regimes, mainly towards the Americas. The New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York City and El Colegio de México (Colmex) in Mexico City both were built based on receiving exiled academics from Europe. Comparing the first twenty years of these organizations, this book offers a deeper understanding of the corresponding institutional contexts and impacts of emigrated, exiled and refugeed academics. It analyses the ambiguities of scientists’ situations between emigration, return‐migration and transnational life projects and examines the corresponding dynamics of application, adaptation or amalgamation of (travelling) theories and methods these academics brought. Despite its institutional focus, it also deals with the broader context of forced migration of intellectuals and scientists in the second half of the last century in Europe and Latin America. In so doing, the book invites a deeper understanding of the challenges of forced migration for scholars in the 21st century.
