En esta Segunda Edición, con la consulta adicional de160 nuevos artículos científico-técnicos y 16 libros, cubriendo parcialmente información hasta el año 2021, se totalizan 353 artículos científico-técnicos y 76 libros, manuales y tesis consultados. Algunos documentos de referencia no pudieron ser localizados. Las investigaciones comprendieron un período de tiempo de 75 años, yendo desde 1946 hasta 2021. Las lagunas de estabilización (lagoons, ponds) han sido objeto de investigaciones, opiniones y resultados, contradictorios algunos, con estudios de lagunas a escala de laboratorio, a escala piloto y a escala completa, sobre los distintos aspectos, condiciones y parámetros que interactúan en el diseño, operación y mantenimiento. Las investigaciones han sido efectuadas durante la segunda mitad del Siglo XX y los 20 años que llevamos de este nuevo Siglo XXI. Mi deseo y pretensión es poner a la disposición del lector interesado un compendio de estudios formales que le puedan allanar el camino hacia el descubrimiento o la ampliación de sus conocimientos sobre la riqueza del campo de las lagunas de estabilización en el tratamiento de aguas residuales domésticas. El libro está organizado en capítulos por temas específicos, donde se han resumido los resultados principales de las investigaciones, con una conclusión particular en cada uno de ellos, incluyendo los temas de la fotosíntesis, los modelos hidráulicos de diseño para la remoción orgánica y bacteriológica, la recirculación, la acción del viento, el uso de pantallas deflectoras, la localización de las estructuras de entrada y salida, entre otros. La revisión del texto de la primera edición ha sido total, con el reordenamiento, reescritura y ampliación de todo su contenido, dándole una mayor claridad y coherencia a los temas abordados. Se ha ampliado el tema de la mortalidad bacteriana, que incluye la propuesta de una nueva fórmula basada en datos propios de Nicaragua para el cálculo de la constante de mortalidad bacteriana (Kb). Adicionalmente, se profundiza el análisis de incertidumbre con simulaciones de Monte Carlo aplicada a un caso específico. Se ha dedicado un apartado especial a la tecnología de Reservorios de Estabilización o Reservorios de Almacenamiento y Tratamiento de aguas residuales, que ha sido desarrollada en Israel por su proyección en el reúso del agua residual tratada. También se ha introducido el tema de los filtros de roca para la remoción de algas del efluente de lagunas de estabilización. El tema de los modelos mecanicistas fue ampliado, con una revisión del estado del arte, en que destaca el modelo de Dinámica de Fluidos Computacional (CFD), que se proyecta con mayor intensidad entre los modelos matemáticos. Finalmente, fue agregado un nuevo Capítulo 18 titulado Pautas Generales de diseño, con el objetivo de que le puedan servir de orientación a los ingenieros diseñadores.
