This textbook details the variety of number formats used by computers, thereby helping to ground readers in what can and cannot be represented accurately, especially by floating-point numbers. The book's first part details standard representations of integers and floating-point numbers. The second explores other number representations, including the wide variety recently developed to support artificial intelligence (AI) and its demand for efficiency in representation to accommodate the ever-expanding scope of neural network models. Chapters describe each format, with examples in code (Python and C) and exercises. This new edition includes three new chapters on posits, AI number formats, and a collaborative experiment with an AI to generate novel number formats. Topics and features: Explores how computers use numbers to complete operations Adds new chapters on posits and AI number formats Includes exercises and examples that are code snippets in C or Python Implements and tests new AI-designed number formats (as designed by GPT-4) Provides thorough grounding on what can and cannot be represented accurately A textbook eminently suitable for undergraduates in computer science, the work also will appeal to software developers, engineers, scientists, AI experts, and anyone who programs for fun.

This book covers pseudorandom number generation algorithms, evaluation techniques, and offers practical advice and code examples. Random Numbers and Computers is an essential introduction or refresher on pseudorandom numbers in computer science. The first comprehensive book on the topic, readers are provided with a practical introduction to the techniques of pseudorandom number generation, including how the algorithms work and how to test the output to decide if it is suitable for a particular purpose. Practical applications are demonstrated with hands-on presentation and descriptions that readers can apply directly to their own work. Examples are in C and Python and given with an emphasis on understanding the algorithms to the point of practical application. The examples are meant to be implemented, experimented with and improved/adapted by the reader.

How Computers Really Work written by Matthew Justice and has been published by No Starch Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-29 with Computers categories.

An approachable, hands-on guide to understanding how computers work, from low-level circuits to high-level code. How Computers Really Work is a hands-on guide to the computing ecosystem: everything from circuits to memory and clock signals, machine code, programming languages, operating systems, and the internet. But you won't just read about these concepts, you'll test your knowledge with exercises, and practice what you learn with 41 optional hands-on projects. Build digital circuits, craft a guessing game, convert decimal numbers to binary, examine virtual memory usage, run your own web server, and more. Explore concepts like how to: Think like a software engineer as you use data to describe a real world concept Use Ohm's and Kirchhoff's laws to analyze an electrical circuit Think like a computer as you practice binary addition and execute a program in your mind, step-by-step The book's projects will have you translate your learning into action, as you: Learn how to use a multimeter to measure resistance, current, and voltage Build a half adder to see how logical operations in hardware can be combined to perform useful functions Write a program in assembly language, then examine the resulting machine code Learn to use a debugger, disassemble code, and hack a program to change its behavior without changing the source code Use a port scanner to see which internet ports your computer has open Run your own server and get a solid crash course on how the web works And since a picture is worth a thousand bytes, chapters are filled with detailed diagrams and illustrations to help clarify technical complexities. Requirements: The projects require a variety of hardware - electronics projects need a breadboard, power supply, and various circuit components; software projects are performed on a Raspberry Pi. Appendix B contains a complete list. Even if you skip the projects, the book's major concepts are clearly presented in the main text.

Introduction To Quantum Computers written by Gennady P Berman and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-07-07 with Science categories.

Quantum computing promises to solve problems which are intractable on digital computers. Highly parallel quantum algorithms can decrease the computational time for some problems by many orders of magnitude. This important book explains how quantum computers can do these amazing things. Several algorithms are illustrated: the discrete Fourier transform, Shor's algorithm for prime factorization; algorithms for quantum logic gates; physical implementations of quantum logic gates in ion traps and in spin chains; the simplest schemes for quantum error correction; correction of errors caused by imperfect resonant pulses; correction of errors caused by the nonresonant actions of a pulse; and numerical simulations of dynamical behavior of the quantum Control-Not gate. An overview of some basic elements of computer science is presented, including the Turing machine, Boolean algebra, and logic gates. The required quantum ideas are explained.

Numerical Computing With Ieee Floating Point Arithmeti written by Michael L. Overton and has been published by SIAM this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-29 with Mathematics categories.

This book provides an easily accessible, yet detailed, discussion of computer arithmetic as mandated by the IEEE 754 floating point standard, arguably the most important standard in the computer industry. The result of an unprecedented cooperation between academic computer scientists and industry, the standard is supported by virtually every modern computer. Although the basic principles of IEEE floating point arithmetic have remained largely unchanged since the first edition of this book was published in 2001, the technology that supports it has changed enormously. Every chapter has been extensively rewritten, and two new chapters have been added: one on computations with higher precision than that mandated by the standard, needed for a variety of scientific applications, and one on computations with lower precision than was ever contemplated by those who wrote the standard, driven by the massive computational demands of machine learning. The second edition of Numerical Computing with IEEE Floating Point Arithmetic includes many technical details not readily available elsewhere, along with many new exercises. It explores the rationale for floating point representation, correctly rounded arithmetic, exception handling, and support for the standard provided by floating point microprocessors and programming languages. Key concepts such as cancellation, conditioning and stability are also discussed. The book emphasizes historical development, from the early history of computing, through the 2008 and 2019 revisions of the floating-point standard, to the latest advances in microprocessor support. It also includes a previously unpublished letter by Donald E. Knuth on the value of gradual underflow, a key requirement of the standard. This book should be accessible to any reader with an interest in computers and mathematics, including students at all levels. Some basic knowledge of calculus and programming is assumed in the second half. There is enough variety of content that all but the most expert readers will find something of interest.
