This textbook is an introduction to algebra via examples. The book moves from properties of integers, through other examples, to the beginnings of group theory. Applications to public key codes and to error correcting codes are emphasised. These applications, together with sections on logic and finite state machines, make the text suitable for students of computer science as well as mathematics students. Attention is paid to historical development of the mathematical ideas. This second edition contains new material on mathematical reasoning skills and a new chapter on polynomials has been added. The book was developed from first-level courses taught in the UK and USA. These courses proved successful in developing not only a theoretical understanding but also algorithmic skills. This book can be used at a wide range of levels: it is suitable for first- or second-level university students, and could be used as enrichment material for upper-level school students.

Data Compression written by David Salomon and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Computers categories.
Data compression is one of the most important techniques in computing engineering. From archiving data to CD-ROMs and from coding theory to image analysis, many facets of computing make use of data compression in one form or another. This book is intended to provide an overview of the many different types of compression: it includes a taxonomy, an analysis of the most common systems of compression, discussion of their relative benefits and disadvantages, and their most common usages. Readers are presupposed to have a basic understanding of computer science: essentially the storage of data in bytes and bits and computing terminology, but otherwise this book is self-contained. The book divides naturally into four main parts based on the main branches of data compression: run length encoding, statistical methods, dictionary-based methods, and lossy image compression (where in contrast to the other techniques, information in the data may be lossed but an acceptable standard of image quality retained). Detailed descriptions of many of the most well-known compression techniques are covered including: Zip, BinHex, Huffman coding, GIF and many others.

Electronic Digital Systems Fundamentals, 2nd Edition is an introductory text that provides coverage of the various topics in the field of digital electronics. The key concepts presented in this book are discussed using a simplified approach that greatly enhances learning. The use of mathematics is kept to the very minimum and is discussed clearly through applications and illustrations. Each chapter is organized in a step-by-step progression of concepts and theory. The chapters begin with an introduction, discuss important concepts with the help of numerous illustrations, as well as examples, and conclude with summaries. The overall learning objectives of this book include: Describe the characteristics of a digital electronic system. Explain the operation of digital electronic gate circuits. Demonstrate how gate functions are achieved. Use binary, octal, and hexadecimal counting systems. Use Boolean algebra to define different logic operations. Change a logic diagram into a Boolean expression and a Boolean expression into a logic diagram. Explain how discrete components are utilized in the construction of digital integrated circuits. Discuss how counting, decoding, multiplexing, demultiplexing, and clocks function with logic devices. Change a truth table into a logic expression and a logic expression into a truth table. Identify some of the common functions of digital memory. Explain how arithmetic operations are achieved with digital circuitry. Describe the operation of microcontrollers.

The second edition of this timely, definitive, and popular book continues to pursue the question: what is the most efficient way to pack a large number of equal spheres in n-dimensional Euclidean space? The authors also continue to examine related problems such as the kissing number problem, the covering problem, the quantizing problem, and the classification of lattices and quadratic forms. Like the first edition, the second edition describes the applications of these questions to other areas of mathematics and science such as number theory, coding theory, group theory, analog-to-digital conversion and data compression, n-dimensional crystallography, and dual theory and superstring theory in physics. Results as of 1992 have been added to the text, and the extensive bibliography - itself a contribution to the field - is supplemented with approximately 450 new entries.
