For many years it has been an article of faith of numerical analysts that the evaluation of derivatives of complicated functions should be avoided. Derivatives were evaluated using finite differences or, more recently, using symbolic manipulation packages. The first has the disadvantage of limited accuracy. The second has disadvantages of being expensive and requiring considerable computer memory. The recent developments described in this text allow the evaluation of derivatives using simple automatic derivative evaluation subroutines pro grammed in FORTRAN or BASIC. These subroutines can even be programmed on a personal computer. The concept for the evaluation of the derivatives was originally developed by Wengert over 20 years ago. Significant im provements have been made in Wengert's method and are utilized in this text. The purpose of this text is to familiarize computer users with a simple and practical method for obtaining the partial derivatives of complicated mathematical expressions. The text illustrates the use of automatic deriva tive evaluation subroutines to solve a wide range of nonlinear least-squares, optimal control, system identification, two-point boundary value problems, and integral equations. The numerical values of the derivatives are evalu~ ated exactly, except for roundoff, using simple FORTRAN or BASIC sub routines. These derivatives are derived automatically behind the scenes, from the equivalent of analytical expressions, without any effort from the user. The use of costly software packages is not required.

This textbook is intended to introduce advanced undergraduate and early-career graduate students to the field of numerical analysis. This field pertains to the design, analysis, and implementation of algorithms for the approximate solution of mathematical problems that arise in applications spanning science and engineering, and are not practical to solve using analytical techniques such as those taught in courses in calculus, linear algebra or differential equations.Topics covered include computer arithmetic, error analysis, solution of systems of linear equations, least squares problems, eigenvalue problems, nonlinear equations, optimization, polynomial interpolation and approximation, numerical differentiation and integration, ordinary differential equations, and partial differential equations. For each problem considered, the presentation includes the derivation of solution techniques, analysis of their efficiency, accuracy and robustness, and details of their implementation, illustrated through the Python programming language. This text is suitable for a year-long sequence in numerical analysis, and can also be used for a one-semester course in numerical linear algebra.

Methods Of Nonlinear Analysis written by Pavel Drabek and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-18 with Mathematics categories.

In this book, fundamental methods of nonlinear analysis are introduced, discussed and illustrated in straightforward examples. Each method considered is motivated and explained in its general form, but presented in an abstract framework as comprehensively as possible. A large number of methods are applied to boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations. In this edition we have made minor revisions, added new material and organized the content slightly differently. In particular, we included evolutionary equations and differential equations on manifolds. The applications to partial differential equations follow every abstract framework of the method in question. The text is structured in two levels: a self-contained basic level and an advanced level - organized in appendices - for the more experienced reader. The last chapter contains more involved material and can be skipped by those new to the field. This book serves as both a textbook for graduate-level courses and a reference book for mathematicians, engineers and applied scientists

Nonlinear dynamics is still a hot and challenging topic. In this edited book, we focus on fractional dynamics, infinite dimensional dynamics defined by the partial differential equation, network dynamics, fractal dynamics, and their numerical analysis and simulation.Fractional dynamics is a new topic in the research field of nonlinear dynamics which has attracted increasing interest due to its potential applications in the real world, such as modeling memory processes and materials. In this part, basic theory for fractional differential equations and numerical simulations for these equations will be introduced and discussed. In the infinite dimensional dynamics part, we emphasize on numerical calculation and theoretical analysis, including constructing various numerical methods and computing the corresponding limit sets, etc.In the last part, we show interest in network dynamics and fractal dynamics together with numerical simulations as well as their applications.

It is an incontestable fact that numerical analysis techniques are used rou tinely (although not always effectively) in virtually every quantitative field of scientific endeavor. In this book, which is directed toward upper-division and graduate level students in engineering and mathematics, we have selected for discussion subjects that are traditionally found in numerical analysis texts. But our choice of methodology rejects the traditional where analysis and experience clearly warrant such a departure, and one of our primary aspirations in this work is to equip the reader with the wherewithal to apply numerical analysis thinking to nontraditional subjects. For there is a plethora of computer-oriented sciences such as optimization, statistics, and system analysis and identification that are sorely in need of methods comparable to those related here for classical numerical analysis problems. Toward uncovering for the reader the structure of numerical methods we have, for example, devoted a chapter to a metric space theory for iter ative application of operators. In this chapter, we have collected those definitions and concepts of real and functional analysis that are requisite to a modern intermediate-level exposition of the principles of numerical anal ysis. Further, we derive the abstract theory (most notably, the contraction mapping theorem) for iteration processes.

Introductory Numerical Analysis written by Mircea Andrecut and has been published by Universal-Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-02 with Mathematics categories.

The aim of this book is to provide a simple and useful introduction for the fresh students into the vast field of numerical analysis. Like any other introductory course on numerical analysis, this book contains the basic theory, which in the present text refers to the following topics: linear equations, nonlinear equations, eigensystems, interpolation, approximation of functions, numerical differentiation and integration, stochastics, ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Because the students need to quickly understand why the numerical methods correctly work, the proofs of theorems were shorted as possible, insisting more on ideas than on a lot of algebra manipulation. The included examples are presented with a minimum of complications, emphasizing the steps of the algorithms. The numerical methods described in this book are illustrated by computer programs written in C. Our goal was to develop very simple programs which are easily to read and understand by students. Also, the programs should run without modification on any compiler that implements the ANSI C standard. Because our intention was to easily produce screen input-output (using, scanf and printf), in case of WINDOWS visual programming environments, like Visual C++ (Microsoft) and Borland C++ Builder, the project should be console-application. This will be not a problem for DOS and LINUX compilers. If this material is used as a teaching aid in a class, I would appreciate if under such circumstances, the instructor of such a class would send me a note at the address below informing me if the material is useful. Also, I would appreciate any suggestions or constructive criticism regarding the content of these lecture notes.
