For many years the Austrian tunneling industry has demanded that research is urgently required to establish a theoretical basis for the New Austrian TUnneling Method and to assist site engineers in the often difficult day to day decisions. In particular it was felt that numerical models need to be improved considerably in order to be able to act as useful tools in predicting soil/rock mass behavior during tunneling. The required improvement not only refers to the quality of the models but also to their ease of use. As long as an experienced modeler is required to spend days in preparing the input and in interpreting the results the models will not be useful at the tunnel site. It is heartening therefore that a group of scientists in Austria has come together to attempt to tackle this challenging task. The initiative has been supported in a number of ways by the Austrian tunneling industry. All Aus trian companies associated with tunneling sent representatives to the man agement advisory board, which ensured that the research carried out in the project, was of benefit to the industry. The Austrian Geomechanics Society sponsored the project with a considerable amount, which was mainly used to cover site costs. HL-AG and OSAG, as well as the joint ventures allowed access to tunnel sites thereby making it possible to test new developments.

Research into Tunneling Field Effect Transistors (TFETs) has developed significantly in recent times, indicating their significance in low power integrated circuits. This book describes the qualitative and quantitative fundamental concepts of TFET functioning, the essential components of the problem of modelling the TFET, and outlines the most commonly used mathematical approaches for the same in a lucid language. Divided into eight chapters, the topics covered include: Quantum Mechanics, Basics of Tunneling, The Tunnel FET, Drain current modelling of Tunnel FET: The task and its challenges, Modeling the Surface Potential in TFETs, Modelling the Drain Current, and Device simulation using Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD). The information is well organized, describing different phenomena in the TFETs using simple and logical explanations. Key features: * Enables readers to understand the basic concepts of TFET functioning and modelling in order to read, understand, and critically analyse current research on the topic with ease. * Includes state-of-the-art work on TFETs, attempting to cover all the recent research articles published on the subject. * Discusses the basic physics behind tunneling, as well as the device physics of the TFETs. * Provides detailed discussion on device simulations along with device physics so as to enable researchers to carry forward their study on TFETs. Primarily targeted at new and practicing researchers and post graduate students, the book would particularly be useful for researchers who are working in the area of compact and analytical modelling of semiconductor devices.

Mechanized Tunnelling In Urban Areas written by Vittorio Guglielmetti and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-07 with Technology & Engineering categories.
Internationally, the mechanized excavation of tunnels has intensified in the last two decades, as the number of tunnels being constructed for subways and railway underpasses increases. The subject of mechanized tunnelling in urban areas has not previously received the attention that it deserves, despite there being specific hazards associated with the construction of tunnels in metropolitan areas, including poor ground conditions, water tables higher than the level of tunnels, and subsidence leading to damage to the existing structures on the surface. The application of technologies for achieving the stability of the tunnel and for minimizing surface settlement is described in this book. Accurate characterization of the ground; rigorous assessment and management of risk from design to maintenance; the correct choice of a tunnel boring machine and a plan for the advancement of the tunnel; specific excavation procedures and real-time monitoring of excavation parameters are all discussed in this thorough work.

It has become increasingly important, particularly in an urban environment, to predict soil behaviour and to confine the settlement or deformation of buildings adjacent to construction sites. One important factor is the choice of construction procedure for the installation of piles, sheet pile walls, anchors or for soil improvement techniques, ground freezing and tunnelling methods. The modelling of construction processes, which are frequently associated with large deformations of the soil and with strong changes in the structure of the soil around the construction plant, in the case of, for example, a drill, a bit, a vibrator, or an excavation tool, requires sophisticated and new methods in numerical modelling. Often the simulation of the construction procedure is neglected in the calculations. Such methods are described and discussed in this book, as are examples of the methods applied to geotechnical practice, field and laboratory testing as well as case studies. This volume provides a valuable source of reference for scientists in geotechnical engineering and numerical modelling, geotechnical engineers, post graduate students, construction companies and consultants, manufacturers of geotechnical construction plants and software suppliers and developers of geotechnical construction methods.
