Non sostituisce un manuale, perché non ci sono tutte le dimostrazioni ma solo alcune, considerate importanti, che danno il gusto dello stile di questa materia. Ricorda come la teoria sia nata dalle esigenze dell'analisi matematica e come sia legata al problema dei fondamenti; discute il riduzionismo e presenta anche la teoria alternativa rivale delle categorie. Distingue la teoria propria dell'infinito dal linguaggio insiemistico che pervade la matematica. Nelle applicazioni si insiste sul principio di induzione e sulle definizioni induttive, e sulla derivazione delle proprietà degli insiemi finiti, con tutte le definizioni equivalenti di finito, e si indica lo studio delle versioni effettive dei risultati teorici, in particolare la definizione esplicita di funzioni ed enumerazioni, fino gettare un ponte con la teoria della calcolabilità, in vista dell'insegnamento.

In The Dynamics of Meaning, Gennaro Chierchia tackles central issues in dynamic semantics and extends the general framework. Chapter 1 introduces the notion of dynamic semantics and discusses in detail the phenomena that have been used to motivate it, such as "donkey" sentences and adverbs of quantification. The second chapter explores in greater depth the interpretation of indefinites and issues related to presuppositions of uniqueness and the "E-type strategy." In Chapter 3, Chierchia extends the dynamic approach to the domain of syntactic theory, considering a range of empirical problems that includes backwards anaphora, reconstruction effects, and weak crossover. The final chapter develops the formal system of dynamic semantics to deal with central issues of definites and presupposition. Chierchia shows that an approach based on a principled enrichment of the mechanisms dealing with meaning is to be preferred on empirical grounds over approaches that depend on an enrichment of the syntactic apparatus. The chapters in this edited volume explore the sociolinguistic implications of orthographic and scriptural practices in a diverse range of communicative contexts, ranging from schoolrooms to internet discussion boards. The focus is on the way that scriptural practices both index and constitute social hierarchies, identities and relationships and in some cases, become the focus for public language ideological debates. Capitalizing on the now robust body of literature on orthographic choice and debate in sociolinguistics and anthropological linguistics, the volume addresses a number of cross-cutting themes that connect orthographic practices to areas of contemporary interest in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology. These themes include: the different social implications of self vs. other representation and the permeability of the personal/social and the public/private; how scriptural practices ("inscription") serve as sites for social discipline; the historical and intertextual frameworks for the meaning potentials of orthographic choice (relating to issues of genre and style); and writing as a broader semiotic field: the visual and esthetic dimensions of texts and metalinguistic "play" in spelling and its ambiguous implications for writer stance.
