This work discusses the processes and dynamics of the landscapes of the mining industry, of the degraded areas, and of their possibilities for redevelopment through the creation of "new landscapes". The case of abandoned mining areas is seen in the context of the three phases of landscape transformation (previous, contemporary and subsequent to the mining activity), and in the context of the expanse of the regions affected by the phenomenon. The latter led to the hypothesis that the territory enhancement project should be placed within a complex system, whose main features are widespread interventions involving and intercepting both new and consolidated landscape networks.

Tunnels and Underground Cities: Engineering and Innovation meet Archaeology, Architecture and Art contains the contributions presented at the World Tunnel Congress 2019 (Naples, Italy, 3-9 May 2019). The use of underground space is continuing to grow, due to global urbanization, public demand for efficient transportation, and energy saving, production and distribution. The growing need for space at ground level, along with its continuous value increase and the challenges of energy saving and achieving sustainable development objectives, demand greater and better use of the underground space to ensure that it supports sustainable, resilient and more liveable cities. This vision was the source of inspiration for the design of the logos of both the International (ITA) and Italian (SIG) Tunnelling Association. Gli autori di questa ricerca, finanziata dal MIUR nel quadro di un'intensa attenzione rivolta al paesaggio dalla comunità scientifica, hanno voluto affrontare uno dei più centrali e dibattuti temi posto in evidenza dalla Convenzione Europea del Paesaggio: la necessità che l'attenzione paesaggistica non sia riservata, com'è accaduto fino ad oggi, solo alle aree di particolare valore e interesse, ma venga estesa anche ai "paesaggi della vita quotidiana e ai paesaggi degradati". La ricerca si pone quindi l'obiettivo di individuare ed analizzare, quelle situazioni, sempre più diffuse nei contesti urbani, periurbani, industriali e rurali delle varie regioni italiane, che sono l'esito negativo di usi impropri, spreco delle risorse naturali, abnorme produzione di scarti, proliferazione di spazi che denunciano un'assenza di "progettualità paesaggistica" e che si trovano spesso, per effetto dei processi espansivi della città e della rapida, anonima e spesso conflittuale trasformazione del territorio, a diretto contatto con i luoghi della vita quotidiana delle popolazioni. Con l'espressione"paesaggi del rifiuto" ci si è voluti riferire a quelle numerose situazioni che hanno generato dismissioni, abbandoni, sfruttamenti abnormi delle risorse e degrado della qualità ambientale, disgregazione delle strutture territoriali, processi di marginalizzazione e di rifiuto sociale, perdita di identità dei paesaggi storici,mancato soddisfacimento delle mutate esigenze sociali. Si tratta di fenomeni estesi e diffusi, che coinvolgono sovente spazi strategici, della città e del territorio, dove è possibile avviare processi di rigenerazione ecologica, di promozione di attività per il tempo libero, di miglioramento delle qualità percettive, per una migliore qualità della vita La ricerca individua e definisce metodologie di analisi e ipotesi progettuali innovative, che, superando la nozione di "risarcimento" e "restauro" del paesaggio e le operazioni di sola "mitigazione ambientale", propongono progetti di paesaggio, fondati sulla capacità di stabilire nuove relazioni fra elementi di varia natura, materiali e immateriali, piuttosto che fra oggetti definiti in sé, ponendo l'accento sulle risorse da recuperare, sulle dinamiche del mutamento da interpretare e sulle competenze disciplinari da coinvolgere,volgendo l'attenzione ai "processi" anziché ai singoli oggetti, e analizzando i rapporti con il "contesto", legante indispensabile tra le varie azioni di progettazione paesistica. This book explores the advantages of a linear model of planning in reducing regional inequalities. Linear planning, commonly discussed in the past as a method which plans the development of the city, is completely redefined here in the form of a design approach inspired by projects shaped by linear routes, such as cycle or walking paths. Such concept is applied to the urgent topic of territorial marginality which specifically neglects rural and mountainous areas and recently is coped by European and National policies. The analysis of these policies demonstrates the necessity of alternative strategies equipped to deal with both the internal and external causes that determine the critical conditions in these fragile environments. By implementing the concept of linear planning in these contexts, this book proposes to enlarge the perspective of traditional policies contrasting the regional inequalities that usually determine the design of projects just within the boundaries of the marginal areas. Cycle and walking paths are experimental cases of linear planning as they have not been influenced or formed by political boundaries and therefore are able to equally involve both the central and marginal zones. This book presents a review of current issues such as regional inequalities, with attention to their related policies, as well as an analysis of the concept of linear planning as seen through the study of one of the most famous cases of a walking path—the Way of St. James in Spain.
