Until recently B-spline curves and surfaces (NURBS) were principally of interest to the computer aided design community, where they have become the standard for curve and surface description. Today we are seeing expanded use of NURBS in modeling objects for the visual arts, including the film and entertainment industries, art, and sculpture. NURBS are now also being used for modeling scenes for virtual reality applications. These applications are expected to increase. Consequently, it is quite appropriate for The.N'URBS Book to be part of the Monographs in Visual Communication Series. B-spline curves and surfaces have been an enduring element throughout my pro fessional life. The first edition of Mathematical Elements for Computer Graphics, published in 1972, was the first computer aided design/interactive computer graph ics textbook to contain material on B-splines. That material was obtained through the good graces of Bill Gordon and Louie Knapp while they were at Syracuse University. A paper of mine, presented during the Summer of 1977 at a Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers meeting on computer aided ship surface design, was arguably the first to examine the use of B-spline curves for ship design. For many, B-splines, rational B-splines, and NURBS have been a bit mysterious.

Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines have become the de facto standard in CAD/CAM and computer graphics. This well-known book covers NURBS from their geometric beginnings to their industrial applications. The second edition incorporates new results and a chapter on Pythagorean curves, a development that shows promise in applications such as NC machining or robot motion control. Includes more than fifty new figures.

The latest from a computer graphics pioneer, An Introduction to NURBS is the ideal resource for anyone seeking a theoretical and practical understanding of these very important curves and surfaces. Beginning with Bézier curves, the book develops a lucid explanation of NURBS curves, then does the same for surfaces, consistently stressing important shape design properties and the capabilities of each curve and surface type. Throughout, it relies heavily on illustrations and fully worked examples that will help you grasp key NURBS concepts and deftly apply them in your work. Supplementing the lucid, point-by-point instructions are illuminating accounts of the history of NURBS, written by some of its most prominent figures. Whether you write your own code or simply want deeper insight into how your computer graphics application works, An Introduction to NURBS will enhance and extend your knowledge to a degree unmatched by any other resource. - Presents vital information with applications in many different areas: CAD, scientific visualization, animation, computer games, and more. - Facilitates accessiblity to anyone with a knowledge of first-year undergraduate mathematics. - Details specific NURBS-based techniques, including making cusps with B-spline curves and conic sections with rational B-spline curves. - Presents all important algorithms in easy-to-read pseudocode-useful for both implementing them and understanding how they work. - Includes complete references to additional NURBS resources.

"Curves and Surfaces in Geometric Modeling: Theory and Algorithms offers a theoretically unifying understanding of polynomial curves and surfaces as well as an effective approach to implementation that you can apply to your own work as a graduate student, scientist, or practitioner." "The focus here is on blossoming - the process of converting a polynomial to its polar form - as a natural, purely geometric explanation of the behavior of curves and surfaces. This insight is important for more than just its theoretical elegance - the author demonstrates the value of blossoming as a practical algorithmic tool for generating and manipulating curves and surfaces that meet many different criteria. You'll learn to use this and other related techniques drawn from affine geometry for computing and adjusting control points, deriving the continuity conditions for splines, creating subdivision surfaces, and more." "It will be an essential acquisition for readers in many different areas, including computer graphics and animation, robotics, virtual reality, geometric modeling and design, medical imaging, computer vision, and motion planning."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. In the history of technology, many fields have passed from an initial stage of empirical recipes to a mature stage where work is based on formal theories and procedures. This transition is made possible through a process called "modeling". Also Computer Graphics as a separate field of Computer Science makes extensive use of formal theories and procedures of modeling, often derived from related disciplines such as mathematics and physics. Modeling makes different application results consistent, unifying varieties of techniques and formal approaches into a smaller number of models by generalizing and abstracting the knowledge in Computer Graphics. This volume presents a selection of research papers submitted to the conference "Modeling in Computer Graphics: Methods and Applications" held at the Research Area of the National Research Council in Genoa, Italy, on June 28 -July 1, 1993. This meeting was the ideal continuation of a previous conference organized in Tokyo, Japan, in April 1991. The success and the variety of research themes discussed at that meeting suggested to promote a new working conference on methods and applications of modeling to be held in Italy two years later.

Each of these Analysing Architecture Notebooks is devoted to a particular theme in understanding the rich and varied workings of architecture. They can be thought of as addenda to the foundation volume Analysing Architecture, which first appeared in 1997 and has subsequently been enlarged in three further editions. Examining these extra themes as a series of Notebooks, rather than as additional chapters in future editions, allows greater space for more detailed exploration of a wider variety of examples, whilst avoiding the risk of the original book becoming unwieldy. Curve is a divisive issue in architecture. Some see curves as expensive and decadent; others as an expression of transcendence – a way that the human mind can express its freedom from quotidian constraints. Yet others use curves to emulate some of the most beautiful forms in nature. This Notebook considers the various authorities to which architects look for the generation of their curves. It also considers the aspirations curves manifest in architectural form.
