Excerpt from Nursery School Education The reader will recognize that in the following pages the authors have approached the subject of Nursery Schools each from a special standpoint - whether it be that of the student of psychology, of education, or of the laws of health. Although there has been collaboration between the different authors, each is responsible for her own section only. I desire to express my grateful acknowledgments to friends who have kindly contributed valuable advice and criticism, and especially to Miss E. M. Wragge and Miss E. S. Newman, who have generously devoted much time and care to a revision of the manuscript. I am also indebted to Mr. George Widdows, F.R.I.B.A., for preparing a plan for a group of Nursery Schools, and to Miss Edith Hodsman for furnishing me with details of the equipment of the Darlington Training College Nursery School. Excerpt from The Open-Air Nursery School This vivid book, like Mr. Alec Paterson's Across the Bridges, makes the reader see things which he ought to see, and know things which he ought to know. It gives the human side, which had to be portrayed too sparingly in Mr. Charles Booth's great work on the life and labour of the people of London. It is full of experience, insight and observation. For us, living to-day, it has a plain message of citizenship. For those who come after us it will have the value of history. How much we should learn from such a book, if Pestalozzi had had time to write it, about the orphans whom he fed and washed and taught at Stanz! Excerpt from Sense-Plays and Number-Plays for the School and Nursery A system of educational apparatus simple or com plicated, but always conventional and formal, is being advocated by the followers of Madame Montessori as the best means of providing for the proper sense-training of children. It was invented in order to enable the teacher of a very large class to have at hand employment which the individual child could find for himself without much suggestion or interference from without. It has advantages presupposing a very large class and a large amount of imitativeness and docility on the part of the children, but to us in England it seems like a revival of the old 'gifts and Occupations of Froebel. The twentieth-century educator, like him of the nineteenth century, has sought to crystallize her ideas in a scheme with a particular apparatus based upon the scheme. Excerpt from Infant Education From Two to Six Years of Age: Applicable to the Infant School and the Nursery The following work, although necessarily entering into the details of an Infant School, will not he duly appreciated if it shall he mistaken for an Infant School Book exclusively. With the exception of a few matters of Infant School arrangement, the whole volume may he used to train even a single child in a nursery, under the care of a judicious mother or governess. This will at once appear, when it is considered that the First Section contains the general principle of Infant Training, - the Second describes the Apparatus, which will he found as useful in the nursery as in the Infant School, - the Third, with the exception of classification and monitors, arranges the instruction of a week, which a mother or governess may, if she pleases, adopt in private tuition, besides embodying the requisite intellectual lessons, - and the Fourth presents those moral lessons which every child requires, whether alone or in school. Excerpt from Nursery Education: A Survey of Day Nurseries, Nursery Schools, Private Kindergartens, in the United States; Report of the Committee on the Infant and Preschool Child There also arose the possibility of overlapping between this Committee and the Section of the Conference on Medical Service. That Section was undertaking a survey of com munity health programs for young children. This Committee therefore limited 1ts study of health programs to the survey of the standards of health inspection in day nurseries and nursery schools. The Committee also voted to undertake a survey of the child in the home and chose an advisory committee for this part of its program. A survey of legislation relating to the education and training of young children was not considered by this Committee since it was being considered by other Committees of the Conference. The Committee therefore found it necessary to concentrate on its two main projects: first, a Survey of Institutions for the Education and Training of Young Children; and, second, the Study of the Young Chila' in the Home. Excerpt from The Child Under Eight The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions Of the best theory and practice in English education of today. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches Of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and Of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which Of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. NO artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. Excerpt from The Career of an Elementary School Teacher Of all the forms of service for the Kingdom of God for which to-day recruits are sought, the work of elementary teaching calls with special urgency for men and women of single-minded devotion. Few, perhaps, feel within themselves at the outset a conscious fitness or clear vocation for this high task. There are not many men and women now clearly convinced that they were called by God to this service, who were perfectly sure, when first they attempted to teach, that they had a special vocation. Such a conviction often develops by slow degrees in the course of training and experience. But all those who feel strongly the love of learning and the joy of sharing it, or the love of little children and the sacredness of their growth and development, should consider carefully whether this may not be the life-work towards which their own natural inclinations are rightly guiding them. Those, too, who are concerned for the needs of the world at large, who recognize the urgent necessity for a new attitude of mind towards the social, international, and inter-racial problems that beset us, may well consider whether the true education of the mass of the people is not the surest way to build up the new world for which we long. Each of these three different aspects of the work may be interpreted as a call to those who have the power to meet some of its manifold demands.
