Feminism And Nursing written by Joan Roberts and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-21 with Health & Fitness categories.

This book examines nursing's feminist consciousness as the profession has developed and evolved over time. The interrelationship between the status of nursing and the status of women in patriarchal society is analyzed. Nursing's struggle to overcome its oppression and gain increased autonomy and political power is considered from an historical perspective. Early leaders in the profession, such as Florence Nightingale, Lavinia Dock, and Lillian Wald, are analyzed with regard to their social reform, political, and feminist activities. Nursing's support for the Equal Rights Amendment and its role in the women's movement that reemerged in the 1960s is examined in light of the profession's ambivalence to feminist issues. The last 20 years show that the profession has become actively aware of important issues such as pay equity and equal job opportunity and that nursing has become more cognizant and supportive of feminist goals on a variety of issues. This work provides a comprehensive review of the history of the nursing profession while simultaneously instructing in new paradigms of thought relative to provision of healthcare and human services by women.

On The Politics Of Ignorance In Nursing And Health Care written by Amelie Perron and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-14 with Medical categories.

Ignorance is mostly framed as a void, a gap to be filled with appropriate knowledge. In nursing and health care, concerns about ignorance fuel searches for knowledge expected to bring certainty to care provision, preventing risk, accidents, or mistakes. This unique volume turns the focus on ignorance as something productive in itself and works to understand how ignorance and its operations shape what we do and do not know. Focusing explicitly on nursing practice and its organization within contemporary health settings, Perron and Rudge draw on contemporary interdisciplinary debates to discuss social processes informed by ignorance, ignorance’s temporal and spatial boundaries, and how ignorance defines what can be known by specific groups with differential access to power and social status. Using feminist, postcolonial and historical analyses, this book challenges dominant conceptualizations and discusses a range of "nonknowledges" in nursing and health work, including uncertainty, abjection, denial, deceit and taboo. It also explores the way dominant research and managerial practices perpetuate ignorance in healthcare organisations. In health contexts, productive forms of ignorance can help to future-proof understandings about the management of healthy/sick bodies and those caring for them. Linking these considerations to nurses’ approaches to challenges in practice, this book helps to unpack the power situated in the use of ignorance and pays special attention to what is safe or unsafe to know, from both individual and organisational perspectives. On the Politics of Ignorance in Nursing and Health Care is an innovative read for all students and researchers in nursing and the health sciences interested in understanding more about transactions between epistemologies, knowledge building practices and research in the health domain. It will also be of interest to scholars involved in the interdisciplinary study of ignorance.

Just A Union Of Nurses written by John Silver Ph D and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-19 with Nurses categories.

In Just a union, Dr.Silver presents CNA leaders and staff the opportunity to tell their own story about the years leading up to, and the years after the great staff nurse rebellion in California in 1993. In 1995, the CNA s new leadership disaffiliated themselves from the American Nurses Association, which has historically billed itself as THE voice of nursing. In just 4 years, they managed to accomplish what no other nursing group or organization had managed to accomplish even up to now- a mandated nurse-patient ratio law. It was an epic battle, and the details of that battle provide nursing organizations, and perhaps even other organizations and political groups, a road map for achieving political success. This battle pitted a group of very determined union bedside practicing nurses against some of the strongest lobbying groups in healthcare, including groups within nursing itself. Over the course of this struggle, the staff nurses took on the California Hospital Association, the American Hospital Asssociation, the American Nurses Association, the Association of Nurse Executives, and finally, the very popular (at the time) and charismatic new governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The political tactics used, and the legal battles which this organization had to confront were daunting, and resources were scarce in the beginning. All of these struggles are documented in just a union . Dr. Silver has taken this information which CNA has provided and examined a model of political empowerment to test the model. In the world of political empowerment, there are no good guys and bad guys . There is only the ability to get your legislation passed, and there is no doubt that in regards to political empowerment, the CNA is the most successful group in nursing."
