Italians first settled in the Newark area in the 1880s. Italian Americans of Newark, Nutley, and Belleville shows these immigrants and their families from 1900 to the 1950s. The street peddler, the barber, the baker, the undertaker, the macaroni maker, the concert musician, and more are portrayed here in the grace and dignity of their work. Outings to the shore or Branch Brook Park balanced hard work and long hours. Family gatherings, weddings, first communions, and processions for the feasts of St. Gerard, St. Rocco, and St. Bartholomew were all a part of the life of the family and the vibrant Italian neighborhoods. More than 200 vintage photographs from family albums tell these stories.

Nutley has been over three hundred years in the making. Originally owned by Native Americans, it was sold to Capt. Robert Treat in 1666 and became part of the Newark land tract. After several boundary disputes and after breaking away from Newark and then Bloomfield and finally Belleville, the town stood proudly on its own. Franklin, as Nutley was originally known, grew and prospered in its independence. Early in the twentieth century, Nutley was the home of many prominent writers and artists. Mark Twain visited often to confer with his magazine editor. On one of her many visits, sharpshooter Annie Oakley was so taken by this warm community that she and her husband, Frank Butler, bought property on Grant Avenue, built a house, and lived here for several years. With its proximity to New York City and its many acres of picturesque parkland, the town grew rapidly and was soon transformed by the laying of trolley tracks along Franklin Avenue, the relocation of the business district, and the subdivision of large estates, necessary to house the growing population. Through all of this change, however, Nutley maintained its quaint small-town atmosphere and never lost sight of the need to preserve its sense of community and history.

Once part of the original Newark land tract of 1666, Nutley has grown from a weekend getaway for tired New Yorkers and a permanent home for artists and writers into a charming town of 30,000 residents. Though only three square miles in area, Nutley boasts over 125 acres of park land, as well as the beautiful Third River, which runs through the town. In Nutley, author John Demmer presents a fascinating look at the changes the town has undergone, as well as the life of its residents through the years. Demmer also illustrates Nutley's earliest commercial industry, the brownstone quarry, as well as the textile and banker's safety paper industry.
