As a young man, Tony has it all including supportive, loving parents and siblings. He was one of the most popular young men in high school and definitely part of the “in crowd.” Schoolwork always comes easy enough for him to get passing grades without trying very hard. The fact that Tony likes to live dangerously “on the edge” and is a very mischievous teenager seems to make him all the more appealing to others, especially all the girls. He is passionate about body fitness and it shows in his physique. Tony is also one of the most charming, handsome and well-mannered teenagers you could ever meet. And, he knows exactly how to use these qualities to his advantage. As the middle child, Tony is best friend to his brother who is exactly two years older and a great admirer and protector of his beautiful sister who is three years younger. Unlike Tony, his brother Tyke is an exceptional student who has to work hard to earn his good grades. But, that doesn’t stop Tony from convincing Tyke to get into mischief with him from time to time. In fact, as Tyke watches the teenager that Tony becomes, Tyke feels compelled to spend more time with his younger brother to ensure his well-being. In spite of Tyke’s efforts, however, he is not able to protect his brother from a near-fatal accident. It is at this point that Tony’s life takes a downward spiral. This story is really about the struggles and challenges that Tony has to endure after this life-changing event and the subsequent experiences that are a result of the earlier accident. Educational and entertaining, funny and free. Everyone likes having a superhero in the family. At least, life won't be boring. But Megan Havervlok doesn't have a family. She lives in an orphanage, and that orphanage stands in Polderdam, the most boring village in the Netherlands. That makes it difficult to experience exciting adventures. Everything changes on her eighth birthday. On that day, Granny comes to visit. Granny needs help with counting and calculations, with baking eggs and… with experiencing adventures. Granny is a superhero by profession. Meg loves adventures. She offers to help Granny. This results in a colourful collection of short stories, each more beautiful and funnier than the other. Meg wrote them all in a beautiful book, with a front cover by the famous artist Gerard Monster, a book that grandmothers can read aloud, so their grandchildren can enjoy, and above all laugh out loud. For grandmothers and their grandchildren, aged 9 to 99. Megan Havervlok wrote numbers 1 and 2 on Google Books' list of the world's most popular free Dutch children's books (April 2022). When we asked Megan how an eight-year-old could beat all those professional authors, she said: "Pffff. Simple. With a superhero like Granny around, everything is possible."

The Penwith Peninsula in Cornwall is where the land ends. In The Swordfish and the Star Gavin Knight takes us into this huddle of grey roofs at the edge of the sea at the beginning of the twenty-first century. He catches the stories of a whole community, but especially those still working this last frontier: the Cornish fishermen. These are the dreamers and fighters who every day prepare for battle with the vast grey Atlantic. Cornwall and its seas are brought to life, mixing drinking and drugs and sea spray, moonlit beaches and shattering storms, myth and urban myth. The result is an arresting tapestry of a place we thought we knew; the precarious reality of life in Cornwall today emerges from behind our idyllic holiday snaps and picture postcards. Even the quaint fishermen’s pubs on the quay at Newlyn, including the Swordfish and its neighbour the Star, turn out to be places where squalls can blow up, and down again, in an instant. Based on immersive research and rich with the voices of a cast of remarkable characters, this is an eye-opening, dramatic, poignant account of life on Britain’s most dangerous stretch of coast. Television Variety Shows written by David M. Inman and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-03 with Performing Arts categories.

For the few hundred television viewers in 1946, a special treat on the broadcast schedule was the variety show called Hour Glass. It was the first TV program to go beyond talking heads, cooking demonstrations, and sporting events, featuring instead dancers, comics, singers, and long commercials for its sponsor, Chase and Sanborn coffee. Within two years, another variety show, Texaco Star Theatre, became the first true television hit and would be credited with the sales of thousands of television sets. The variety show formula was a staple of television in its first 30 years, in part because it lent itself to a medium where everything had to be live and preferably inside a studio. Most of the early television stars--including Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, and Arthur Godfrey--rose to prominence through weekly variety shows. In the 1960s, major stars such as Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Danny Kaye were hosting variety shows. By the 1970s, the format was giving way to sitcoms and dramas, but pop music stars Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Donny and Marie Osmond hosted some of the last of the species. This book details 57 variety shows from the 1940s through the 1990s. A history of each show is first provided, followed by a brief look at each episode. Air date, guest stars, sketches performed, and a listing of songs featured are included.
