Na forma de asno, sendo um observador insuspeito, é testemunha privilegiada da intimidade dos homens e mulheres com quem se depara ao longo de suas aventuras, e assim a obra acaba compondo um interessante retrato da vida privada na época. Mais do que isso, a estrutura do romance possibilita a inserção de uma série de narrativas paralelas, contadas pelas personagens e ouvidas por Lúcio, sendo a mais conhecida a célebre história de Eros e Psiquê, que ocupa quase três dos onze capítulos do livro.
