Esta obra aborda os sentidos simbólicos do consumo de bebidas alcoólicas, assim como os contextos em que as bebidas são consumidas, entre os povos indígenas karipuna, galibi-marworno, palikur e galibi kali ́na, todos localizados no extremo norte do Estado do Amapá, município de Oiapoque, nas Terras Indígenas Uaçá, Juminã e Galibi de Oiapoque. Já está bastante estabelecido na literatura antropológica sobre o tema que, onde quer que um ou mais tipos de bebida alcoólica estejam disponíveis, seu consumo é utilizado para denir o mundo social em termos de significados simbólicos. São poucas ou nenhuma as bebidas neutras de significado. Toda bebida é um veículo simbólico, carrega uma mensagem. Identifica, discrimina, constrói e manipula sistemas sociais, valores, relações interpessoais, normas e expectativas de comportamento. O consumo de bebidas alcóolicas entre os povos indígenas do Uaçá é feito sob orientação de padrões socioculturais que o estruturam e atuam como sua fonte de sentido. O que e por que se consome, seus efeitos no comportamento e a avaliação deste só podem ser apreendidos com referência a esses padrões. A hipótese é de que o consumo de bebidas alcoólicas entre os povos indígenas do Uaçá é ambivalente. A qualificação de seu consumo é positiva quando expressar interação amistosa entre as famílias, entre os povos e com o sobrenatural. E é negativa quando representa ruptura dessa sociabilidade. O bem-beber e a embriaguez reprovável não estão diretamente ligados à quantidade de bebida ingerida, por isso a ideia de excesso ganha sentido apenas se relacionada ao contexto específico na qual ocorre.

This report tries to put boundaries around the abstraction that is "social inclusion". It is intended for policy makers, academics, activists and development partners - indeed anyone who is curious about how to address inclusion in a world that is witness to intense demographic, spatial, economic and technological transitions. Placing the discussion of social inclusion within such global transitions and transformations, it argues that social inclusion is an evolving agenda. While it does not purport to provide definitive answers as to how to achieve social inclusion in any given context, the report offers an easy-to-use definition and a framework to assist practitioners in asking, outlining and developing some of the right questions that can help advance the agenda of inclusion in different contexts. There are seven main messages in this report: 1. Excluded groups exist in all countries. 2. Excluded groups are consistently denied opportunities. 3. Intense global transitions are leading to social transformations that create new opportunities for inclusion as well as exacerbating existing forms of exclusion. 4. People take part in society through markets, services, and spaces. 5. Social and economic transformations affect the attitudes and perceptions of people. As people act on the basis of how they feel, it is important to pay attention to their attitudes and perceptions. 6. Exclusion is not immutable. Abundant evidence demonstrates that social inclusion can be planned and achieved. 7. Moving ahead will require a broader and deeper knowledge of exclusion and its impacts as well as taking concerted action.

This is the first book that documents poverty systematically for the world's indigenous peoples in developing regions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The volume compiles results for roughly 85 percent of the world's indigenous peoples. It draws on nationally representative data to compare trends in countries' poverty rates and other social indicators with those for indigenous sub-populations and provides comparable data for a wide range of countries all over the world. It estimates global poverty numbers and analyzes other important development indicators, such as schooling, health, and social protection. Provocatively, the results show a marked difference in results across regions, with rapid poverty reduction among indigenous (and non-indigenous) populations in Asia contrasting with relative stagnation - and in some cases falling back - in Latin America and Africa. Two main factors motivate the book. First, there is a growing concern among poverty analysts worldwide that countries with significant vulnerable populations - such as indigenous peoples - may not meet the Millennium Development Goals, and thus there exists a consequent need for better data tracking conditions among these groups. Second, there is a growing call by indigenous organizations, including the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples, for solid, disaggregated data analyzing the size and causes of the "development gap."

Indigenous people constitute a large portion of Latin America's population and suffer from widespread poverty. This book provides the first rigorous assessment of changes in socio-economic conditions among the region's indigenous people, tracking progress in these indicators during the first international decade of indigenous peoples (1994-2004). Set within the context of existing literature and political changes over the course of the decade, this volume provides a rigorous statistical analysis of indigenous populations in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru, examining their poverty rates, education levels, income determinants, labour force participation and other social indicators. The results show that while improvements have been achieved in some social indicators, little progress has been made with respect to poverty.
