Adolfo Caminha após ter-lhe morrido a mãe, ficando órfão com mais cinco irmãos, foi para a companhia de parentes em Fortaleza. Seis anos depois, em 1883, mudou-se para a casa de seu tio no Rio de Janeiro que o matriculou na antiga Escola da Marinha. Em 1886, saiu a publicação em versos de Vôos Incertos. No mesmo ano, fez uma viagem de instrução aos Estados Unidos. Em 1887, a 16 de Dezembro, promovido a 2º tenente, publicou Judite e Lágrimas de um Crente, livro de contos. Em 1888, regressa a Fortaleza e envolve-se em rumoroso escândalo, ao raptar a esposa de um alferes. O ministro da Marinha interfere, inutilmente, para pôr fim à situação. Em 1890, Adolfo Caminha, pressionado de todos os lados, se demite e com a mulher e duas filhas segue para o Rio de Janeiro, onde vive como funcionário publico. Em 1891, fundou, em Fortaleza, a Revista Moderna, e colaborou no jornal O Norte. Em 1893, lançou o romance A Normalista, colaborou na Gazeta de Notícias e em O País. Em 1894, publicou No País dos Ianques, fruto de sua ida, oito anos antes, aos Estados Unidos. Um ano depois, o romance O Bom Crioulo, e Cartas Literárias. Em 1896, ano em que fundou a Nova Revista, publicou Tentação. Atormentado pelas dificuldades econômicas e debilitado pela tuberculose, morre precocemente. Deixou inacabados os romances: Ângelo e O Emigrado.

O romance foi esquecido na primeira metade do século XX mas voltaria a ser publicado na segunda metade do mesmo século, tendo posteriormente sido traduzido para o inglês, espanhol, alemão, francês e italiano. Atualmente, faz parte do programa de leituras do exame vestibular de muitas universidades brasileiras.Nesta edição, fez-se uma revisão da ortografia utilizada na versão gentilmente cedida pelo Ministério da Educação do Brasil, à qual se acrescentaram anotações para enquadramento dos leitores contemporâneos.

This book consists of the study of five Brazilian novels produced in the last decades of the nineteenth century: O mulato (1881), O cortigo (1890), both by Aluisio Azevedo, A came (1888), by Julio Ribeiro, Bom-Crioulo (1895), by Adolfo Caminha, and Dona Guidinha do Pogo (1897) by Manoel de Oliveira Paiva. These novels, traditionally considered naturalist, portray tensions caused by the realignment, or, better still, the sudden visibility of people such as strong women, blacks, mulattoes, and homosexuals in Brazilian fiction.
