"This collection, which contributes to preserve an old, disappearing tradition, includes 64 folktales recorded by 26 informants from the Azores (20) and Madeira (6). Being of Indo-European character, some tales are older than the existence of nations. The introduction, in Portuguese and in English, includes an overview of Portuguese immigration to California. Faithfully transcribed in order to reflect the manner of speaking of each informant, the tales begin with summaries in English, being followed by Isabel Cardigos and Paulo Correia's international classification, which, in addition to Brazil, includes numerous parallels from the Portuguese-speaking world (Angola, Cape Verde, Goa, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, St. Thomas and Prince, East Timor), as well as variants from the Iberian cultural area to which Portugal belongs (Spain, Spanish America, and the Sephardim). The book concludes with four appendices: vocabulary, informants, motifs, and tale-types"--Back cover.

Os contos que hoje publicamos formam parte de uma extensa colecção de tradições populares portuguesas reunidas por nós já, por assim dizer, estenografando-as ao saírem da boca de narradores populares, já recebendo-as escritas de pessoas de alguma instrução e de indubitável probidade, que ou as aprenderam na infância ou as ouviram depois de pessoas indoutas. Não amplificámos nenhum; não introduzimos nenhum adjectivo, nenhum ornato; cortámos apenas alguma repetição inútil; introduzimos apenas e raramente algum pronome que a reprodução escrita torna necessário. Como os contos da primeira categoria, isto é, os que nós coligimos directamente da tradição viva, foram ouvidos de preferência de pessoas que se exprimiam bem, não apresentam deturpações grosseiras de palavras; uma ou outra entendemos dever corrigi-la; conservámos, porém, as formas provinciais interessantes com todo o cuidado.
