A publicação de O descredenciamento filosófico da arte é um acontecimento importante para a reflexão estética no Brasil (e em outros países de língua portuguesa), pois, por um lado, Arthur Danto, falecido em outubro de 2013, é considerado um dos mais influentes estetas da atualidade. Por outro lado, a posição ocupada por este livro no conjunto da obra do filósofo é de grande importância, já que a redação da maioria dos seus ensaios é imediatamente posterior à publicação de A transfiguração do lugar-comum considerado por Danto seu principal livro de estética e retoma, desenvolvendo-os, pontos considerados por ele ainda não suficientemente trabalhados.
