Danto argues that recent developments in art--in particular the production of works that cannot be told from ordinary things--make urgent the need for a new theory of art. He demonstrates the relationship between philosophy and art and the connections that hold between art, social institutions, and art history.

Much of what constitutes our experience of our immediate environment is quite ordinary and familiar, in particular, where we live. While policymakers and academics are constantly seeking transformations in housing, what we seek from our own housing is stability and lack of change. We seek secure roots to our lives rather than step-changes and radical reform. This book considers this ordinary experience of housing and how we come to depend upon it. The notion of the ordinary is used to argue against the conceits of policymaking and the fetish for domestic design. Using a variety of methods such as critical analysis and film criticism (looking at the work of film-makers as diverse as Bergman, Dreyer, Shyamalan, Tarkovsky, Tati and the Wachowski Brothers), it provides an original, impressionistic view of the role housing plays in our lives.

What makes something "art"? If an object falls under the category of “art,” then you'd suspect it has something in common with other items in this category. Art forms, however, produce strikingly different manifestations of art. For example, sculpture produces three-dimensional art, painting and drawing produce two-dimensional art, and performance art produces a time frame in which the art exists. How do these distinct practices have the possibility of producing creations that are acknowledged as “art?” The Philosophical Functionality of the Tattoo focuses on tattoos, a traditionally unaccepted type of art, to help understand the properties attributed to art. If tattoos are not “art,” why not? If tattoos are “art,” why so? Figuring out these characteristics about tattoos, specifically, contributes to the general ontology of art.

The present volume is a continuation of the series Contemporary Philosophy. As with the earlier volumes in the series, the present chronicles purport to give a survey of significant trends in cont- porary philosophy. The need for such surveys has, I believe, increased rather than decreased over the years. The philosophical scene appears, for various reasons, more complex than ever before. The continuing process of specialization in most branches, the increasing contact between philosophers from various cultures, the emergence of new schools of thought, particularly in philosophical logic and in the philosophy of language and ethics, and the increasing attention being paid to the history of philosophy in discussions of contemporary problems, are the most important contributing factors. Surveys of the present kind are a valuable source of knowledge of this complexity. The surveys may therefore help to strengthen the Socratic element of modern philosophy, the intercultural dialogue or Kommunikationsgemeinschaft. So far, eight volumes are published in this series, viz. Philosophy of Language and Philosophical Logic (Volume 1), Philosophy of Science (Volume 2), Philosophy of Action (Volume 3), Philosophy of Mind (Volume 4), African Philosophy (Volume 5), Medieval Age Philosophy (Volume 6/1 and Volume 6/2), Asian Philosophy (Volume 7), and Philosophy of Latin America (Volume 8).

This book explores a fascinating interpretation of Warhol's "The Last Supper Series." By showing how the sacred is manifest in modern advertising, it demonstrates that America's most influential artist, Andy Warhol (1928-1987), did not rob Leonardo's "Il Cenacolo" of its sublimity.

Aesthetics After Metaphysics written by Miguel de Beistegui and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Art categories.
This book focuses on a dimension of art which the philosophical tradition (from Plato to Hegel and even Adorno) has consistently overlooked, such was its commitment - explicit or implicit - to mimesis and the metaphysics of truth it presupposes. De Beistegui refers to this dimension, which unfolds outside the space that stretches between the sensible and the supersensible - the space of metaphysics itself - as the hypersensible and show how the operation of art to which it corresponds is best described as metaphorical. The movement of the book, then, is from the classical or metaphysical aesthetics of mimesis (Part One) to the aesthetics of the hypersensible and metaphor (Part Two). Against much of the history of aesthetics and the metaphysical discourse on art, he argues that the philosophical value of art doesn't consist in its ability to bridge the space between the sensible and the supersensible, or the image and the Idea, and reveal the sensible as proto-conceptual, but to open up a different sense of the sensible. His aim, then, is to shift the place and role that philosophy attributes to art.
