Concluída em 1891, quando Frank Wedekind contava com apenas 27 anos, a peça O despertar da primavera é considerada uma experiência intermediária entre o naturalismo e o expressionismo. Essa "tragédia infantil", como a definiu seu autor, é atravessada por temas até hoje atuais: da gravidez na adolescência ao aborto, da liberdade sexual ao suicídio, do tabu em torno do sexo à privação ao conhecimento do próprio corpo. Não à toa, o texto enfrentou ardilosos obstáculos da censura mundo afora, inclusive no Brasil. Em nova tradução brasileira, feita diretamente do alemão, O despertar da primavera inaugura a coleção de teatro moderno da Temporal.
