O Evangelho de João, escrito pelo Apóstolo João, é diferente dos outros três evangelhos e contém muito conteúdo teológico em relação à pessoa de Cristo e o significado de fé. Mateus, Marcos e Lucas são frequentemente chamados de “Evangelhos sinópticos” por causa de seus estilos e conteúdos similares, e porque eles dão uma sinopse da vida de Cristo. O Evangelho de João não começa com o nascimento de Cristo ou Seu ministério terreno, mas com a atividade e características do Filho de Deus antes de Se tornar carne (João 1:14). O Evangelho de João enfatiza a divindade de Cristo, como é visto pelo fato de que ele usa frases como 'o Verbo era Deus' (João 1:1), 'o Salvador do mundo' (4:42), o 'Filho de Deus' (usado repetidamente), 'Senhor e...Deus' (João 20:28) ao descrever Jesus. No Evangelho de João, Jesus também afirma Sua divindade com várias declarações de “EU SOU” (compare com Êxodo 3:13-14). Mas João também enfatiza o fato da humanidade de Jesus, querendo mostrar o erro de uma seita religiosa de seu tempo, os Gnósticos, que não acreditavam na humanidade de Cristo. João deixa claro seu propósito principal ao escrever o evangelho: “Na verdade, fez Jesus diante dos discípulos muitos outros sinais que não estão escritos neste livro. Estes, porém, foram registrados para que creiais que Jesus é o Cristo, o Filho de Deus, e para que, crendo, tenhais vida em seu nome” (João 20:30-31).
