Traditional Forest Related Knowledge written by John A. Parrotta and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-14 with Science categories.

Exploring a topic of vital and ongoing importance, Traditional Forest Knowledge examines the history, current status and trends in the development and application of traditional forest knowledge by local and indigenous communities worldwide. It considers the interplay between traditional beliefs and practices and formal forest science and interrogates the often uneasy relationship between these different knowledge systems. The contents also highlight efforts to conserve and promote traditional forest management practices that balance the environmental, economic and social objectives of forest management. It places these efforts in the context of recent trends towards the devolution of forest management authority in many parts of the world. The book includes regional chapters covering North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia and the Australia-Pacific region. As well as relating the general factors mentioned above to these specific areas, these chapters cover issues of special regional significance, such as the importance of traditional knowledge and practices for food security, economic development and cultural identity. Other chapters examine topics ranging from key policy issues to the significant programs of regional and international organisations, and from research ethics and best practices for scientific study of traditional knowledge to the adaptation of traditional forest knowledge to climate change and globalisation.

Participatory Research in Conservation and RuralLivelihoods: Doing Science Together starts from theunderstanding that all people create knowledge and that thecreation of sustainable livelihoods and of conditions that protectand sustain rural ecosystems are interrelated. Here local experts and professional researchers writeindependently about the participatory research processes throughwhich they created new knowledge together. They demonstrate thatinterdependent science can produce more accurate and locallyappropriate data, while frankly addressing persisting issues suchas unequal power, whose knowledge and what ways of knowing count, whose voice can be heard or appear in print, and other dilemmas ofthis practice. Conservation scientists and practitioners will bothbenefit from reading this book. First book to examine community participatory researchtechniques that focuses on conservation aims Unique book in that it is written from the perspective ofparticipating community volunteers and researching scientists Part of the prestigious Conservation Science and Practiceseries published in association with the Zoological Society ofLondon "Participatory Research in Conservation and RuralLivelihoods is brilliant, passionate, and inspiring..." The Application Of Economic Techniques In Environmental Impact Assessment written by David E. James and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-09 with Science categories.

The contribution of economic thought and method to environmental management needs practical illustration. Too few books on the subject achieve such an outcome. This book is among the notable exceptions. That economics can provide a powerful vehicle for communicating an integrated understanding of the often diverse scientific findings germane to environmental im pact assessment needs to be illustrated convincingly. This book does just that. But it does more. It speaks across cultures: not to transfer know-how from one culture to another, but rather to activate an effective exchange of insights from one locale on the planet to another. As such, it is a genuine contribution to the great en vironmental exhortation of our times - think globally, act locally. Too often the people best placed to make such contributions are too committed to practical outcomes and making a living doing so. Just occasionally, however, they can be persuaded to make the special effort required to communicate globally. In this book, David James has once again orchestrated the contributions of vir tuoso performers. In doing so he has emulated the contribution he sustained throughout the International Drylands Project and preparation of the books written with John Dixon and Paul Sherman: The Economics ofDry/and Management and Case Studies in Dry/and Management (Earthscan, London). Taken together with his recent work as Special Commissioner for the path breaking national Forest and Timber Inquiry for the Australian Government, we have a body of work characterised by great worthiness, integrity and true global significance.
