Clarence Bernard Henry's book is a culmination of several years of field research on sacred and secular influences of àsé, the West African Yoruba concept that spread to Brazil and throughout the African Diaspora. Àsé is imagined as power and creative energy bestowed upon human beings by ancestral spirits acting as guardians. In Brazil, the West African Yoruba concept of àsé is known as axé and has been reinvented, transmitted, and nurtured in Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion that is practiced in Salvador, Bahia. The author examines how the concepts of axé and Candomblé religion have been appropriated and reinvented in Brazilian popular music and culture. Featuring interviews with practitioners and local musicians, the book explains how many Brazilian popular music styles such as samba, bossa nova, samba-reggae, ijexá, and axé have musical and stylistic elements that stem from Afro-Brazilian religion. The book also discusses how young Afro-Brazilians combine Candomblé religious music with African American music such as blues, jazz, gospel, soul, funk, and rap. Henry argues for the importance of axé as a unifying force tying together the secular and sacred Afro-Brazilian musical landscape.

Yemanjá é a rainha de todas as águas do mundo, seja dos rios, seja do mar. É considerada protetora dos pescadores e jangadeiros, o seu nome deriva da expressão YéYé Omó Ejá, que significa, mãe cujo filhos são peixes. Na África era cultuada pelos egbá, nação Iorubá da região de Ifé e Ibadan onde se encontra o rio Yemojá. Apesar de, no Brasil, Yemanjá ser cultuada nas águas salgadas, a sua origem é de um rio que corre para o mar. Inclusive, todas as suas saudações, orikís e cantigas remetem a essa origem, Odó Iyà por exemplo, significa mãe do rio, já a saudação Erù Iyà faz alusão às espumas formadas do encontro das águas do rio com as águas do mar, sendo esse um dos locais de culto a Yemanjá. É ela que proporcionará boa pesca nos mares, regendo os seres aquáticos e provendo o alimento vindo do seu reino. É ela quem controla as marés, é a praia em ressaca, é a onda do mar, é o maremoto. Protege a vida marinha. Junta-se ao orixá Oxalá complementando-o como o Princípio Gerador Feminino. Yemanjá é mãe de todo mundo,por isso chamada de Yiá Orí Mãe de todas as cabeças , é o espelho do mundo, que reflecte todas as diferenças, pois a mãe é sempre um espelho para o filho. Ela é a mãe que orienta, que mostra os caminhos, que educa, e sabe, sobre tudo, explorar o potencial de cada um, não faz distinção dos seus filhos, sejam como forem, tenham ou não saído do seu ventre. Assim humildemente criou, com todo amor e carinho, aquele menino cheio de chagas, Omulu, o filho e senhor, o rei da terra, o próprio Sol.Assim também,criou outros Orixás!
