Para tentar manter uma artificiosa e 'inteligente' política de estabilização, as nações desenvolvidas estão minando as finanças públicas e desestruturando o aparelho produtivo nacional. Os maiores exemplos disso são as grandes reduções de capacidade produtiva já ocorridas em muitos setores, notadamente nos da agricultura, indústria têxtil, confecções, brinquedos, componentes eletrônicos e autopeças. Nesses anos de práticas de políticas neoliberais já abandonadas em alguns países os efeitos sociais nefastos já se fazem sentir também aqui: drásticos cortes nos gastos públicos sociais, aumento do desemprego aberto e o de longa duração, desmedido crescimento da violência urbana e grave deterioração dos padrões éticos, políticos e sociais. Por outro lado, torna-se ainda mais difícil a redação de um texto de introdução à Economia, haja vista a crise pela qual passa a Teoria econômica (as "novas" e as "neos") e a "financeirização" criada pela crise financeira internacional, que cresce, justamente, a partir da década de 1970 e parece não ter solução pacífica".
