NAYOLA, o livro digital de arte do filme partilha com o leitor uma viagem de nove anos através do processo criativo de desenvolvimento e de produção desta longa-metragem de animação. O livro digital está organizado em doze capítulos que remetem inicialmente o leitor para o processo de adaptação do argumento, a partir de duas obras literárias escritas por dois consagrados escritores africanos. Primeiro, um conto, escrito por José Eduardo Agualusa, escritor angolano, depois uma peça de teatro, escrita por José Eduardo Agualusa e por Mia Couto, escritor moçambicano. Ao aceder às hiperligações do livro digital, o leitor pode ler primeiro o conto, depois a peça de teatro e finalmente o argumento. Analisar e desfrutar da forma como emergiram no argumento dois enredos, um baseado na peça de teatro, e outro numa viagem original – exterior e interior -, da personagem principal ao longo do filme. Poucos livros sobre processos criativos cinematográficos dão ao leitor tantas possibilidades. Tratando-se de um filme passado durante a fase final da pouco conhecida Guerra Civil Angolana e nos primeiros anos de paz que se lhe seguiram, mas com ecos na Guerra da Independência, o livro partilha com o leitor informação sobre estas duas guerras consecutivas que duraram 40 anos, sobre a Angola actual, colonial e ancestral, e sobre a forma como a história, a cultura, os povos, as línguas e os ecossistemas deste país lindíssimo do sul da África foram incorporados no filme, numa narrativa visual e sonora, poética e deslumbrante. Depois, o livro digital revela ao leitor como foi criada uma ficção com fortes raízes na realidade angolana. Descreve-se a importância das repérages realizadas, da longa fase de desenvolvimento associada a investigações detalhadas sobre todos os aspectos do filme, desde as máscaras africanas, à geomorfologia, flora e fauna, aos costumes e rituais dos povos indígenas do deserto, da música popular ao movimento hip-hop, da estrutura matriarcal da sociedade angolana à intervenção das mulheres na Guerra Civil. As vozes das personagens foram todas criadas por angolanos – actores profissionais e amadores, poetas e músicos -, gravados em Luanda. O leitor pode ver entrevistas com as três actrizes que criaram as vozes das três protagonistas do filme através de hiperligações disponíveis no livro digital. As músicas que compõem a banda sonora do filme são interpretadas por seis excelentes músicos e compositores angolanos. O argumento incorpora memórias, poemas e canções dos actores angolanos. O livro digital é profusamente ilustrado e, muitas hiperligações, permitem ao leitor consultar desde os primeiros estudos gráficos das personagens e dos ambientes, até à sua versão final, testes de cor, testes de animação, o storyboard e o animatic. Partilha-se com o leitor as razões que levaram à escolha das técnicas de animação usadas no filme: o enredo no Passado em 2D e em imagens de arquivo; o enredo no Presente do filme em 3D; as sequências oníricas em pintura animada. Finalmente, produtor e co-produtores revelam os processos de trabalho desta co-produção internacional que envolveu cinco países, Portugal, Bélgica, França, Países Baixos e Angola, e mais de 100 colaboradores. NAYOLA, the digital art book of the movie, shares with the reader a nine-year journey through the creative process of developing and producing this animated feature movie. The digital book is organized into twelve chapters that initially refer the reader to the process of adapting the script, based on two literary works written by two renowned African writers. First, a short story, written by José Eduardo Agualusa, an Angolan writer, then a play, written by José Eduardo Agualusa and Mia Couto, a Mozambican writer. By accessing the links in the digital book, the reader can read the short story, then the play and finally the script. Understand and enjoy the way in which two plots emerged in the script, one based on the play, and the other on an original journey – exterior and interior – of the main character throughout the movie. Few books on cinematographic creative processes give the reader so many possibilities. Being a movie set in Angola, a country in southern Africa, taking place in the final phase of the rather unknown Angolan Civil War, and in the first years of peace that followed the book shares with the reader information about these two consecutive wars that lasted 40 years. Ancestral Angola, its colonial period and the present. The way in which the history, culture, peoples, languages, and ecosystems of this beautiful country were incorporated into the movie, in a visual and sound narrative, poetic and dazzling. Afterwards, the digital book reveals to the reader how a fiction with strong roots in Angolan reality was created. It describes the importance of the repérages carried out, the long development phase associated with detailed investigations into all aspects of the movie. From African masks to geomorphology, flora and fauna, to the customs and rituals of the indigenous peoples of the desert, from popular music to the hip-hop movement, the matriarchal structure of Angolan society to the intervention of women in the Civil War. Professional and amateur Angolan actors, poets and musicians, recorded the voices of all characters in Luanda. The reader can see interviews with the three voice actors that created the voices of the three protagonists of the movie through links available in the digital book. Six excellent Angolan musicians composed and performed the songs that make up the movie soundtrack. The script incorporates memories, poems and songs by the Angolan voice actors. The reader will be able to see and hear them through links available in the digital book. The digital book is profusely illustrated and, many hyperlinks, allow the reader to consult from the first graphic studies of the characters and backgrounds, to their final version, colour tests, animation tests, the storyboard and the animatic. The reasons that led to the choice of the animation techniques used in the movie are shared with the reader: the plot in the Past in 2D and in archival footage, the plot in the Present in 3D, oneiric sequences in animated painting. Finally, the producer and co-producers tell the reader about the work processes of this international co-production that involved five countries, Portugal, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Angola, and more than 100 collaborators. We believe that the digital book will be very interesting for film students and professionals, especially animation cinema, animation movie fans and spectators in general. Amidst the continued debate surrounding the foundations of IPE, coupled with recent methodological and theoretical divides this book argues that an attempt should be made to re-visit the notion of the 'critical'. The challenge posed by contributors to this volume is to assess the development of so-called critical IPE and interrogate whether the theoretical foundations it was built upon have reached their potential. The essays in this volume take up this challenge in a number of different ways but all share a common concern - to re-assess the purpose of critical approaches, reflect on why certain social theorists have been favoured as a point of departure, yet others have largely been ignored. In light of recent debates on the notion of a 'trans-Atlantic divide' within IPE the collection the contributors aim demonstrates how the distinction between the 'critical' and the 'orthodox' (or 'empirical') is only significant if the 'critical' is geared towards a larger, more substantial body of critical social enquiry and engages with what it means to conduct such enquiry.
