Os Homens de Barro, de 1949, foi a terceira peça teatral escrita por Ariano Suassuna, sobrevindo a Uma Mulher Vestida de Sol, de 1947, e Cantam as Harpas de Sião, de 1948. A presente edição traz o texto revisto pelo autor em 2003, com apresentação do professor, crítico e dramaturgo pernambucano Luís Reis. Marcados pelo desamparo e pelo desamor, os personagens da trama se abrigam no fanatismo religioso, elemento estruturante da peça. Trata-se de uma tragédia de viés moderno, na qual o sofrimento dos personagens não é resultado de imponderáveis armadilhas do destino ou inescapáveis desígnios dos deuses, como era comum nas tragédias gregas. A dor e a morte resultam de uma intrincada sobreposição de fatores psicológicos e de fatores socioeconômicos. Sem abdicar do caráter transcendental predominante nas tragédias, o autor não se furta de trazer à cena, ainda que em segundo plano, uma crítica incisiva às injustiças sociais, tão evidentes no sertão nordestino, mostrando como os poderosos agem para desarticular movimentações coletivas potencialmente ameaçadoras ao poder estabelecido.
