O poeta paraibano Augusto dos Anjos é conhecido por seus versos tristes e por um profundo pessimismo existencial. Neste livro, exploramos os fundamentos filosóficos do pessimismo do autor, com destaque para a influência que Schopenhauer exerceu sobre ele, assim como o monismo, doutrina filosófica muito discutida em sua época. Também propomos uma breve reflexão sobre as leituras que apontam em Augusto dos Anjos a luta política contra as injustiças de que o Brasil foi palco, bem como examinamos as mais diferentes recepções de seus versos desde que seu único livro – "Eu" – foi publicado em 1912. Sabemos que em Schopenhauer a dor e o sofrimento são tidos como positivos, enquanto o prazer e a alegria são tidos como negativos. Sempre exageramos nosso pesar, e sempre minimizamos nossas alegrias. Essa concepção existencial pessimista também se encontra em muitos dos versos do poeta paraibano, mas seu pessimismo se fundamenta igualmente no modo como entendeu o monismo de Haeckel. Para o poeta, somos apenas um agregado de carbono destinado ao desaparecimento, e "profundissimamente hipocondríaco", entende-se como um banquete que está sendo preparado para os vermes: "Já o verme – este operário das ruínas –/ [...] / Anda a espreitar meus olhos para roê-los". Mas há, enfim, uma saída para o sofrimento humano: a arte: "Contra a Arte, oh! Morte, em vão teu ódio exerces!". Sem eliminar por completo o sofrimento, a arte suaviza a dor humana e faz da aspereza do mundo uma planície alegre.
