Nos tempos atuais de crescente visibilidade pública dos candomblés, dos seus registros nos livros de tombo e da retórica de preservação dos patrimônios culturais afro-brasileiros, não resulta supérfluo lançar um olhar atento para um passado não tão remoto em que tais práticas de matriz africana eram ora silenciadas, ora perseguidas e depreciadas porquanto identificadas com atraso e desvio dos modelos civilizatórios europeus. Se esse olhar retrospectivo resulta salutar ao constatar o quanto se avançou, ele também nos alerta para o quanto ainda se precisa avançar, pois os discursos da intolerância religiosa de ontem se alastram até hoje, embora em novos púlpitos, com os mesmos efeitos perniciosos. Nesse sentido, o livro de Edmar Ferreira Santos atinge uma meta que qualquer pesquisa em história social pode almejar: a de nos permitir compreender em detalhe a complexidade do passado para, através dele, iluminar os paradoxos do presente (trecho retirado do Prefácio do livro).

Drawing on historical and cultural approaches to race relations, Identities in Flux examines iconic Afro-Brazilian figures and theorizes how they have been appropriated to either support or contest a utopian vision of multiculturalism. Zumbi dos Palmares, the leader of a runaway slave community in the seventeenth century, is shown not as an anti-Brazilian rebel but as a symbol of Black consciousness and anti-colonial resistance. Xica da Silva, an eighteenth-century mixed-race enslaved woman who "married" her master and has been seen as a licentious mulatta, questions gendered stereotypes of so-called racial democracy. Manuel Querino, whose ethnographic studies have been ignored and virtually unknown for much of the twentieth century, is put on par with more widely known African American trailblazers such as W. E. B. Du Bois. Niyi Afolabi draws out the intermingling influences of Yoruba and Classical Greek mythologies in Brazilian representations of the carnivalesque Black Orpheus, while his analysis of City of God focuses on the growing centrality of the ghetto, or favela, as a theme and producer of culture in the early twenty-first-century Brazilian urban scene. Ultimately, Afolabi argues, the identities of these figures are not fixed, but rather inhabit a fluid terrain of ideological and political struggle, challenging the idealistic notion that racial hybridity has eliminated racial discrimination in Brazil.

This book explores cross-cultural medical encounters involving non-Western healers in a variety of imperial contexts from the Arctic, Asia, Africa, Americas and the Caribbean. It highlights contests over healing, knowledge and medicines through the frameworks of hybridisation and pluralism. The intertwined histories of medicine, empire and early globalisation influenced the ways in which millions of people encountered and experienced suffering, healing and death. In an increasingly global search for therapeutics and localised definition of acceptable healing, networks and mobilities played key roles. Healers’ engagements with politics, law and religion underline the close connections between healing, power and authority. They also reveal the agency of healers, sufferers and local societies, in encounters with modernising imperial states, medical science and commercialisation. The book questions and complements the traditional narratives of triumphant biomedicine, reminding readers that ‘traditional’ medical cultures and practitioners did not often disappear, but rather underwent major changes in the increasingly interconnected world.

As relações de poder, próprias ao mundo intra e interterreiros, passam por diferentes espaços, representados por cadeiras e mesas em torno das quais orbitam alianças políticas e rígidas etiquetas ligadas à hierarquia religiosa e ao tempo de iniciação. Aí, o lugar ocupado à mesa está diretamente relacionado com a posição ocupada no sistema religioso. Aqui, a discussão vai além da especulação sobre a dieta das divindades e concentra-se naquilo que as pessoas comem e como comem. Por outro lado, ao buscar compreender os sentidos do comer na sua interface com as redes de poder religioso, o autor demonstra quanto as tradições afro-religiosas são dinâmicas, seja adaptando sua mesa às novas dietas alimentares que chegam aos terreiros por meio dos adeptos, seja criando novas tradições alimentares determinadas pelos orixás. Da sua cadeira ou da sua mesa, babalorixás e ialorixás governam o microcosmo dos seus terreiros, valendo-se de um sistema de redistribuição alimentar e de uma endopolítica fundamentada na ideia de axé, também sinônimo de poder. E como a comida é portadora de axé, comer confunde-se com poder, já que ter poder também é poder comer o que se quer.
