Em Balthazar o narrador, isolado numa ilha onde vive com a pequena filha de Melissa, recebe a inesperada visita de Balthazar, que lhe entrega o manuscrito de Justine. Relendo o seu próprio texto e os comentários do amigo, Darley revive o seu envolvimento com as mulheres do seu passado e toma conhecimento de novos factos.
