O que viam e como viam os gregos e os romanos, ou, ainda, como diziam o que viam, o que julgavam ver e o que imaginavam ver ou poder ver, mesmo que não vissem: eis o nosso tema neste livro que apresentamos à sua apreciação. A visão era o sentido nuclear em nossa Cultura Clássica grega e romana. Por isso, frequentemente os antigos chamavam de “visíveis” todas as coisas que eram apreendidas por quaisquer sentidos. Nosso livro, no entanto, cuida de uma via de mão dupla: se vamos dos olhos ao texto, vamos também do texto aos olhos. Afinal, privilegiando o tema da écfrase, fiamo-nos nos autores da Segunda Sofística, que parecem estar de acordo com Aftônio (Progymnásmata, 10,36,22), quando este diz ἔκφρασίς ἐστι λόγος περιηγηματικὸς ὑπ’ ὄψιν ἄγων ἐναργῶς τὸ δηλούμενον (“écfrase é o lógos descritivo que coloca sob a vista, de forma evidente, o que é explicitado”).
