Within four days, the date-tree had grown as tall as a woman, and out of it came a Fairy, who said to Zezolla, “What do you wish for?” Before Perrault and the Brothers Grimm, Basile penned the first modern literary version of the Cinderella fairytale. It is the story of Zezolla, the daughter of an Italian Prince, who is betrayed by her governess and forced to live the life of a servant—that is until the King announces a feast. With assistance from a date-tree given to her by the Fairies of Sardinia, Zezolla is able to attend the feast and her life is forever changed. In addition, this book contains The She-Bear—a close variant of The Cat Cinderella, also from Giambattista Basile’s The Pentamerone—for an English readership to enjoy. "Critics consider Clarice Lispector the leading female writer in the Brazilian literary canon. Her connections with the nation, however, seem to magically disappear as her work is analysed. This paradox is the starting point for this analysis of the works of an author who - despite being born in the Ukraine - grew up to be an irreplacable presence in Brazilian literature. Non-Brazilian authors, such as the South African Bessie Head and the North American Toni Morrison, provide triggering concepts to help tackle a blind-spot in Brazilian culture: the issue of racial difference. From this new perspective, overlooked black characters in Lispector's work become crucial and relevant, and whiteness emerges as an unexamined set of norms."

Music Culture And Experience written by John Blacking and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-15 with Music categories.

One of the most important ethnomusicologists of the century, John Blacking achieved international recognition for his book, How Musical Is Man? Known for his interest in the relationship of music to biology, psychology, dance, and politics, Blacking was deeply committed to the idea that music-making is a fundamental and universal attribute of the human species. He attempted to document the ways in which music-making expresses the human condition, how it transcends social divisions, and how it can be used to improve the quality of human life. This volume brings together in one convenient source eight of Blacking's most important theoretical papers along with an extensive introduction by the editor. Drawing heavily on his fieldwork among the Venda people of South Africa, these essays reveal his most important theoretical themes such as the innateness of musical ability, the properties of music as a symbolic or quasi-linguistic system, the complex relation between music and social institutions, and the relation between scientific musical analysis and cultural understanding.

This is the fifth and final volume in a series of books examining the problem of suicide around the world and how suicide can be prevented. There are many groups of individuals that have been the focus of special interest. Part One of this volume presents current research and interventions for these groups, including those who have chronic medical illnesses, who are homeless and who are very young. Suicide in the workplace and in jails and prisons presents particular problems for mental health professionals, and the problems involved in preventing suicide in these situations are discussed. Part Two presents discussions of issues that have been of particular concern in recent years, such as whether antidepressants precipitate suicidal behaviour in some people as well as preventing it in others and the complex issues involved in physician-assisted suicide.

The Early Years Of Art History In The United States written by Craig Hugh Smyth and has been published by Princeton Univ Department of Art & this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Art categories.

Art history became established as an academic discipline in the United States between 1865 and 1895, when courses were introduced not only at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, but also at Vassar, Syracuse, Wellesley, Rockford Female Seminary, Radcliffe, and Bryn Mawr. The prominent early role of the women's colleges and smaller universities is just one of the areas investigated in this volume on the genesis and early development of art history in the United States. Other essays focus on single departments of art history, examining the early subjects and methods of American art history and the way in which its practitioners responded to and assimilated contemporary developments in other fields, particularly history, the sciences, and philosophy. A final section examines some of the great scholarly personalities that dominated the field in the early years of this century. The volume includes a complete reprint of E. Baldwin Smith's 1912 survey "The Study of the History of Art in the Colleges and Universities of the United States" (Princeton). The contributors include Pamela Askew, Lauren Weiss Bricker, John Coolidge, Julius Held, Sybil Kantor, George Kubler, Marilyn Aronberg Lavin, Phyllis Williams Lehmann, Hayden Maginnis, Agnes Mongan, Henry Millon, Donald Preziosi, Michael Rinehart, Linda Seidel, Claire Richter Sherman, Craig Hugh Smyth, Mary Ann Stankiewicz, David Van Zanten, and Edward Warburg.

Oxygen-Ozone therapy is a complementary approach less known than homeopathy and acupuncture because it has come of age only three decades ago. This book clarifies that, in the often nebulous field of natural medicine, the biological bases of ozone therapy are totally in line with classical biochemistry, physiological and pharmacological knowledge. Ozone is an oxidizing molecule, a sort of super active oxygen, which, by reacting with blood components generates a number of chemical messengers responsible for activating crucial biological functions such as oxygen delivery, immune activation, release of hormones and induction of antioxidant enzymes, which is an exceptional property for correcting the chronic oxidative stress present in atherosclerosis, diabetes and cancer. Moreover, by inducing nitric oxide synthase, ozone therapy may mobilize endogenous stem cells, which will promote regeneration of ischemic tissues. The description of these phenomena offers the first comprehensive picture for understanding how ozone works and why. When properly used as a real drug within therapeutic range, ozone therapy does not only does not procure adverse effects but yields a feeling of wellness. Half the book describes the value of ozone treatment in several diseases, particularly cutanious infection and vascular diseases where ozone really behaves as a “wonder drug”. The book has been written for clinical researchers, physicians and ozone therapists, but also for the layman or the patient interested in this therapy.
