O livro O Sonho Americano no fim dos tempos: literatura e crise utópica da década de 1990, da professora e pesquisadora de literatura norte-americana Marina Penteado, lança um novo olhar sobre o ideal de Sonho Americano e analisa como ele é percebido na década de 1990, por meio de algumas narrativas estadunidenses que problematizam tal temática. Para tanto, a obra faz um estudo comparativo de três romances, sendo eles: Pastoral americana (American Pastoral, 1997), de Philip Roth, Submundo (Underworld, 1997), de Don DeLillo, e Clube da luta (Fight Club, 1996), de Chuck Palahniuk. A autora desenvolve em seu livro uma análise com base em teorias que discutem o Sonho Americano e a literatura produzida nos Estados Unidos, bem como textos que analisam o período escolhido para estudo, com o propósito de levar em consideração as mudanças que ocorreram na última década do século XX e de que forma elas contribuíram para a crítica ao Sonho Americano. Com uma linguagem acessível e dinâmica, o livro se divide em três partes, sendo cada uma delas centrada em um aspecto da temática escolhida, neste caso: família nuclear, progresso e excepcionalismo americano.
