Containing more than three hundred poems, including nearly a hundred previously unpublished works, this unique collection showcases the intellectual range of Claude McKay (1889-1948), the Jamaican-born poet and novelist whose life and work were marked by restless travel and steadfast social protest. McKay's first poems were composed in rural Jamaican creole and launched his lifelong commitment to representing everyday black culture from the bottom up. Migrating to New York, he reinvigorated the English sonnet and helped spark the Harlem Renaissance with poems such as "If We Must Die." After coming under scrutiny for his communism, he traveled throughout Europe and North Africa for twelve years and returned to Harlem in 1934, having denounced Stalin's Soviet Union. By then, McKay's pristine "violent sonnets" were giving way to confessional lyrics informed by his newfound Catholicism. McKay's verse eludes easy definition, yet this complete anthology, vividly introduced and carefully annotated by William J. Maxwell, acquaints readers with the full transnational evolution of a major voice in twentieth-century poetry.

The Poems Of Thomas Sheridan written by Thomas Sheridan and has been published by University of Delaware Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Poetry categories.

"The reputation of Thomas Sheridan has probably suffered from the occasional ridicule of his longtime friend and collaborator Jonathan Swift. Nevertheless, Swift valued Sheridan's wit and company immensely, and the verse-warfares in which the two friends often indulged were not always won by Swift." "Sheridan was not only one of the most memorable Dubliners of the early eighteenth century. Convivial, charming, highspirited, and feckless, he was also a prominent schoolmaster (the best in Europe, according to Swift), cleric, translator, playwright, essayist, and a prolific writer of accomplished light verse. Called Tom Pun-Sibi, or Tom the Punster, because of his droll essay The Art of Punning, he poured forth a seemingly endless stream of punning satires, verse letters to his friends, and satirical observations on the Dublin of his day." "For all of his prolific output, only some of his Swift poems have remained in print, and they are in various editions of Swift's verse. This volume gathers together for the first time Sheridan's complete poetic works, including those published as broadsides or in contemporary journals and those contained in unpublished letters and manuscripts. Of particular interest for such a social poet is the inclusion of poems to and about Sheridan by his many friends and very vocal enemies."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Poe And The Subversion Of American Literature written by Robert T. Tally Jr. and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-16 with Literary Criticism categories.

Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2014 In Poe and the Subversion of American Literature, Robert T. Tally Jr. argues that Edgar Allan Poe is best understood, not merely as a talented artist or canny magazinist, but primarily as a practical joker who employs satire and fantasy to poke fun at an emergent nationalist discourse circulating in the United States. Poe's satirical and fantastic mode, on display even in his apparently serious short stories and literary criticism, undermines the earnest attempts to establish a distinctively national literature in the nineteenth century. In retrospect, Poe's work also subtly subverts the tenets of an institutionalized American Studies in the twentieth century. Tally interprets Poe's life and works in light of his own social milieu and in relation to the disciplinary field of American literary studies, finding Poe to be neither the poète maudit of popular mythology nor the representative American writer revealed by recent scholarship. Rather, Poe is an untimely figure whose work ultimately makes a mockery of those who would seek to contain it. Drawing upon Gilles Deleuze's distinction between nomad thought and state philosophy, Tally argues that Poe's varied literary and critical writings represent an alternative to American literature. Through his satirical critique of U.S. national culture and his otherworldly projection of a postnational space of the imagination, Poe establishes a subterranean, nomadic, and altogether worldly literary practice.

In The Cooing of the Dove and the Cawing of the Crow Suzanne Pinckney Stetkevych offers original translations, close readings, and new interpretations of selected poems from the two contrasting diwans of the blind Late ʿAbbāsid master-poet, Abū al-ʿAlāʾ al-Maʿarrī (d. 449 H./1057 C.E.). The first is Saqṭ al-Zand (Sparks of the Flint), the highly esteemed collection of qaṣīdah poetry of his youth, which he later disavowed. The second is Luzūm Mā Lā Yalzam (Requiring What Is Not Required), the programmatic double-rhymed collection from his later period of withdrawal and seclusion. She argues that the contrasting ‘poetics of engagement’ and ‘poetics of disengagement’ of the two diwans reflect the transition from High Classical to Post Classical aesthetics.
