Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis marked the dawn of a cinematic tradition in which the relationship between architecture and science fiction is central. Since then, architectural elements have played an important role in the representation of scientific and technological developments, in such a manner that it creates a convincing vision for the projected future, as architects devised visionary plans for the city and society. Oase No. 66 examines the intersection of architecture and science fiction in light of today's information technology, the network society, the perception and experience of the environment and virtual space, and 'cyberpunk'--a genre in which virtual environments are created using computer technology.

Clich And Organization written by Luc Peters and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-29 with Philosophy categories.

Organizations are caught in clichés. This means that they do not think for themselves anymore, but rather simply copy pre-existing ideas. This is giving rise to a world which pretends to be knowable, predictable and mouldable, one in which clichés like efficiency, transparency, means-ends rationality, and the strong leader are used without further thought or critique. This is the reason why organizations come into conflict with themselves, and which causes a seemingly unresolvable crisis. Film, however, can show us a totally different world. It has a subversive potency that can wake up the viewer, making them think again, allowing them to see a world which cannot be perceived anymore. It can show the world as it really is again, and can enable us to break through clichés. This book adopts a unique viewpoint on organizations, through its use of film. With the help of philosophers like Deleuze, Heidegger and Sloterdijk, filmmakers like the Coen Brothers, Cronenberg, Antonioni and Tarkovsky and films like The Big Lebowski, eXistenZ, Stalker and Playtime, a world is revealed and explored. It shows the decisive role played by architecture, and why managers are manipulative and impotent at the same time.

The enduring paradoxes of the home are often brought to light in science-fiction (SF) writing and film. However, while crossovers between architecture and SF have proliferated, the home is often overshadowed by the spectacle of 'otherness'. By examining the home from the estranging perspective of SF, and in particular, the films based on Phillip K. Dick's books, this work offers a unique critical analysis with particular relevance for contemporary architecture.

Public space is not only visually but also acoustically manifest: public nature is a function of visibility and audibility. Including the role of sound in reflections on public space and in its actual design is therefore as necessary as considering the visual. In n0. 9 there are essays about the way in which sound and audio media play an aesthetic, ethical or political role in contemporary urban space. This issue illustrates how radio is undergoing a veritable cultural and artistic revival and how sound is deployed in art in relation to social or spatial surroundings. This issue presents work by international artists and also includes an mp3 disc with sonic artworks and interviews.

In modern-day society the main threats to public health are now considered ‘avoidable illnesses’, which are often caused by a lack of exercise and physical activity. Research suggests that architectural and urban design strategies play an important role in reducing the amount of avoidable illnesses by enabling physical activity through healthier streets. Practitioners must now consider how they can encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles and improve health through urban design. This book presents the path to healthier cities through six core themes - urban planning, walkable communities, neighbourhood building blocks, movement networks, environmental integration and community empowerment. Each theme is presented with an overview of the issues, the solutions and how to apply them practically with exemplars and precedents. It's an essential text that provides practitioners across urban design, architecture, master planning with the necessary knowledge and guidance to understand their role in producing healthier places and put it in to practice.

An art-filled, Cubism-inspired house set in an extensive sculpture park Welcome to Rowdy Meadow, a visionary house that is a complete work of art--from its architecture, interior design, furnishings, and collection of contemporary art to its landscape architecture and private sculpture park. Inspired by Czech cubism, it is unlike any other house anywhere. Designed and decorated by Peter Pennoyer Architects in Hunting Valley, Ohio, it is a structure of tremendous complexity made to feel simple and calm by Pennoyer's mastery of the language of this style. Inside, Anne Walker guides the reader through the house, room by room, showcasing furnishings spanning the Arts and Crafts era through art deco, with pieces by Émile‑Jacques Ruhlmann, Josef Hoffmann, Dagobert Peche, Eileen Gray, and Gio Ponti; and fine art by Walton Ford and James Lee Byars. She then tours the Reed Hilderbrand-designed landscape and sculpture park--with works by Anish Kapoor and Andy Goldsworthy--spread throughout the 146‑acre property. Illustrated with photographs taken throughout the seasons by Eric Piasecki that capture Rowdy Meadow's unique detailing, imagination, and energy, as well as with renderings and drawings, the book itself is an extraordinary achievement.

A Theory Of Intergenerational Justice written by Joerg Chet Tremmel and has been published by Earthscan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12 with Law categories.

This highly accessible book provides an extensive and comprehensive overview of current research and theory about why and how we should protect future generations. It exposes how and why the interests of people today and those of future generations are often in conflict and what can be done. It rebuts critical concepts such as Parfits' non-identity paradox and Beckerman's denial of any possibility of intergenerational justice. The core of the book is the lucid application of a veil of ignorance to derive principles of intergenerational justice which show that our duties to posterity are stronger than is often supposed. Tremmel's approach demands that each generation both consider and improve the well-being of future generations. To measure the well-being of future generations Tremmel employs the Human Development Index rather than the metrics of utilitarian subjective happiness. The book thus answers in detailed, concrete terms the two most important questions of every theory of intergenerational justice: what to sustain? and how much to sustain?
