Enam tahun sudah berlalu sejak edisi ke-6 buku ini. Telah banyak perkembangan baru di bidang farmakoterapi, khususnya farmakogenetika, targeted therapy dan stemcell untuk terapi regeneratif. Dalam Edisi ke-7 ini, akan diuraikan obat-obat mutakhir yang dibuat melalui bioteknik rekombinan seperti biologicals, termasuk sitokin-sitokin, zat-zat pemblokir Tumor Necrosis Factor, interferon, penghambat interleukin, perintang tirosin kinase dan monoklonal antibodies (MOABs). Biological Response Modifier atau imunomodulator semakin banyak disentesa (Humira, Remicade) yang memegang peranan penting pada penanganan penyakit berdasarkan reaksi (auto-) imun. Misalnya penyakit rema, diabetes tipe- 1, MS (multiple sclerosis), jenis-jenis neoplasma (kanker) dan SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematodes). Selanjutnya akan dipaparkan obat-obat kanker baru yang berkembang dalam delapan tahun terakhir, antara lain temsirolimus dan sunitinib untuk kanker ginjal terminal, dan lapatinib untuk kanker payudara lanjut. Sitostatika baru dengan mekanisme kerja yang berlainan adalah tirosin kinase inhibitor, topoisomerase inhibitor (irinotecan, etoposida) dan zat-zat antimetabolit (gemsitabin). Untuk topik geriatri akan diuraikan bahaya efek samping obat-obat tertentu bagi para lansia sehubungan dengan perubahan metabolisme, homeostasis, degenerasi organ-organ dan comorbiditas.
