Let History Into The Mathematics Classroom written by Évelyne Barbin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-27 with Education categories.

This book brings together 10 experiments which introduce historical perspectives into mathematics classrooms for 11 to 18-year-olds. The authors suggest that students should not only read ancient texts, but also should construct, draw and manipulate. The different chapters refer to ancient Greek, Indian, Chinese and Arabic mathematics as well as to contemporary mathematics. Students are introduced to well-known mathematicians—such as Gottfried Leibniz and Leonard Euler—as well as to less famous practitioners and engineers. Always, there is the attempt to associate the experiments with their scientific and cultural contexts. One of the main values of history is to show that the notions and concepts we teach were invented to solve problems. The different chapters of this collection all have, as their starting points, historic problems—mathematical or not. These are problems of exchanging and sharing, of dividing figures and volumes as well as engineers’ problems, calculations, equations and congruence. The mathematical reasoning which accompanies these actions is illustrated by the use of drawings, folding, graphical constructions and the production of machines.

Fields Of Glory written by Jean Rouaud and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-20 with Fiction categories.

Winner of the Prix Goncourt A New York Times Notable Book of the Year The setting may be the rainy lower Loire Valley of the 1950s, but it is the WW I battlefields of Artois, Meuse, Lorraine, and Yser that form the emotional backdrop to this poignant testament to the vitality of life that death cannot dim. Fields of Glory begins as a collection of utterly charming reminiscences of the eccentricities of family elders told by an unnamed and indeterminately aged narrator. In pure and graceful prose, Rouaud describes crotchety grandfather Burgaud with his equally difficult car, a cramped and leaky CV2, and maiden great-aunt Marie with her card file of saints—"A prefatory catalogue of terrifying symptoms refers the reader to the saint specializing in the corresponding disorder. The work of a lifetime." It is in the midst of this comedy of daily life that the melancholy subtext of three generations slowly emerges: the stories of the two young men who were casualties of the Fields of Glory and the family that remains to remember them.

Minority Languages And Multilingual Education written by Durk Gorter and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-04 with Education categories.

This book presents research on the situation minority language schoolchildren face when they need to learn languages of international communication, in particular English. The book takes minority languages as a starting point and it bridges local and global perspectives in the analysis of multilingual education contexts. It examines the interaction of minority languages and cultures, majority languages and lingua franca-s in a variety of settings across different regions and countries on all continents. Even though all chapters in this book involve minority languages, the issues discussed are relevant to any context in which more than language is used in education. The book reveals challenges and opportunities of multilingual education by discussing issues such as Northern and Southern concepts, language education policies, language diversity, interethnic understanding, multimodal language practices, power, conflict, identity and prestige, among many others. “This is the volume that finally accounts for multilingual education from a truly multilingual perspective by involving proposals and research from a variety of multilingual speech communities in the world. The (linguistically) rich Ethiopia and Mexico can teach the poor Europe and other Northern countries about multilingual education. CLIL promoters may learn from Finnish Sámi and Canadian Innu and Mi’gmaq indigenous communities as well as from Basque results. Speakers and teachers of minority and international languages will certainly be glad to hear the news. There is no need for a monolingual bias or tunnel vision in acquiring English in non-English speaking communities. This volume includes new challenging pedagogical perspectives while pointing to interesting conclusions for worldwide educational authorities”. How Big Is An Elephant written by Rossana Bossù and has been published by Annick Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-10 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

Animals big and small introduce pre-schoolers to basic math concepts. With the help of the colorful animals in this book, even the youngest child will be able to grasp the idea of ratio and relative size. The opening illustration shows an elephant, followed by a simple phrase "1 polar bear is smaller than an elephant." An illustration of an elephant , rather than the word, challenges young children to recall the name of the animal. Then, on the facing page, an illustration shows how many polar bears would make up one elephant. It's seven! Subsequent spreads build on this concept--turn the page and readers will discover how many lions make a polar bear, and so on. The animals become progressively smaller, until the last comparison between a lemur and flea. But the book doesn't end there. Children learn that there is one animal that is bigger than them all: a whale, and that it takes all the animals in the book to make just one. Preschoolers will enjoy this fresh approach that teaches them the names of animals as well as the concept of relative size.
