El redescubrimiento que hoy se hace de una tradición metodológica como la cualitativa, presente desde los orígenes de las ciencias sociales, estimuló la publicación de este libro que se orienta a precisar las potencialidades, alcances y articulaciones que los métodos cualitativos tienen en la explicación e interpretación de los problemas sociales. Además, aspira a proporcionar una base lógica y epistemológica que ayude a valorar sus posibilidades y evite su reducción a un simple conjunto de técnicas. La pertinencia de los métodos y técnicas no puede calificarse a priori, sino que depende del problema, de la teoría y en general del planteamiento teórico de una investigación. Y es en este contexto donde los métodos cualitativos constituyen herramientas básicas para la investigación social. Así Observar, escuchar y comprender intenta ofrecer una sistematización de los distintos procedimientos que componen el capital metodológico de la tradición cualitativa. En suma, el libro pretende superar el marco de lo descriptivo y de la enumeración de técnicas o instrumentos de recolección e información, pues plantea debates y desafíos centrales para observar, escuchar y comprender los signos que surgen de la realidad social contemporánea.

"Non-public" was used for the first time in May, 1968, by those working professionally in the cultural domain in France. At the time, they were gathered in Villeurbanne at the head office of the TNP (French National Popular Theatres), and they used this notion in a very militant way to describe all those who were excluded from culture, and whom they considered to have a fundamental right to all cultural offers. In this book, nine researchers from France, Quebec and Mexico tackle these questions through both qualitative and quantitative contributions dealing with various cultural sectors in which the question of non-publics remains unanswered. In fact, the non-public is not so much a group of non-participants but individuals blatantly incapable of appreciating a culture that is unfamiliar, even foreign. For over a century, the popular education movement, in its initial project to bring public and culture closer together, has emphasized this cultural gap, which even today, justifies the necessity for cultural mediation policies. The near-militant voluntarism of the active players in cultural mediation engenders certain expectations: after a large investment in cultural creation is it not justifiable to aspire to reach the largest possible audience?"

Bringing together a multidisciplinary team of scholars, this book explores the importance of ethnicity and cultural economy in the post-Fordist city in the Americas. It argues that cultural, political and economic elites make use of cultural and ethnic elements in city planning and architecture in order to construct a unique image of a particular city and demonstrates how the use of ethnicized cultural production - such as urban branding based on local identities - by the economic elite raises issues of considerable concern in terms of local identities, as it deploys a practical logic of capital exchange that can overcome forms of cultural resistance and strengthen the hegemonic colonization of everyday life. At the same time, it shows how ethnic communities are able to use ethnic labelling of cultural production, ethnic economy or ethno-tourism facilities in order to change living conditions and to empower its members in ways previously impossible.
